16: Band of Skulls – Baby Darling Doll Face Honey
Using jangly guitars, banging beats, and sounding like a well-made mash-up of Chrissie Hynde and the White Stripes, Band of Skulls take heavy influences from classic rock and completely rock out on this fantastic album. Perhaps it is the pairing of the male and female vocals that really draws me in, because I never got into the White Stripes, as the musical formula is very similar; at least, the distortion effect on their guitars is really close to the one Jack White uses, and they also use heavy drumming to back up the whole shebang. That being said, while they do stick to a similar musical formula as the White Stripes, I think that Band of Skulls have made their own consistently amazing album with Baby Darling Doll Face Honey, as there really isn’t a bad track on it; and when I say, “not a bad track”, I really mean, “they’re all quite brilliant, actually”. After one listen, I went back time and time again to rock out to this fantastic ode to classic rock (as well as clear hat tip to the White Stripes), and I am glad I discovered them through their amazingly catchy lead off single, I Know Where I Am; which is definitely one of their best. Looking back, I am really glad that I went and listened to the whole album, because like the lead single, it too, is down right great. Standout Tracks: I Know What I Am, Fires, Cold Fame, Death By Diamonds and Pearls, Light of the Morning.

17: Brandi Carlile – Give Up the Ghost
On her follow up the to the amazing album, The Story, Brandi does right by not deviating from the folk-country rock that she creates oh so well. However, this time around, she ups the ante, and instead of sputtering out after the half-way mark (as I felt her last album kind of did), she stays strong throughout the entire album. On Give Up The Ghost, Brandi’s vocals are more raw and real, and the yodel of her voice is more pronounced and peppered throughout. Overall, this album is a solid one, and Brandi has proven to be quite the talented musician; she is certainly building something more and more beautiful on that foundation she laid with her previous two albums. This time around, she distances herself from those that she could be so directly to in the past (namely, the Indigo Girls); showing growth and attention to a nuanced detail that really signals that she is coming into her own. With this distancing, she highlights her own strength and individuality as an artist, and the result is a wonderful album that should definitely win her many, many new fans; and die hard fans of her previous work should certainly be more than pleased with this direction and growth. Standout Tracks: That Year, Dying Day, Before It Breaks, If There Was No You.

18: Westlife – Where We Are
As a long time fan of Westlife, all I can say, is that if this album doesn’t make you a fan, then you probably never will be. However, for those of us that love beautiful songs about love, I can definitely say that these boys have done it again. Following what was (in my opinion) their best album, Back Home (well, other than their Greatest Hits Vol. 1), I had high hopes for another near-flawless Westlife album. However, worry set in when it was announced that the first single would be a cover of Daughtry’s What About Now (which is the ONLY reason that this album didn’t place higher, and receives four stars from me). While it is a great cover (probably better than the original, which isn’t surprising seeing as the do covers VERY well), their cover of the song, the inclusion of it on this album, and especially the decision to make it the lead off single from the album, are all just extremely unnecessary in my opinion. Westlife has relied on covers so much in the past, and I rarely understand why after listening to the rest of the album. The same holds true with Where We Are; after listening to the rest of the album, it is clear that it stands firmly on its own as a solid album, full of great songs (most, if not all, soaring over What About Now in their quality). Basically, the only thing left to say here, is what’s been said already; it’s a great album of love songs, and if you are a fan of Westlife, you certainly know what to expect, and you will NOT be disappointed. Even working with the predictable Ryan Tedder doesn’t ruin the Westlife formula, and that’s really saying something right there; if it works, it just works. Standout Tracks: Sound of a Broken Heart, How to Break a Heart, Leaving, The Difference, No More Heroes.

19: Angel Taylor – Love Travels
The first time I heard Angel Taylor’s Chai Tea Latte, I was blown away. This song is perfect. The juxtaposition of saccharine sweet lyrics (chock full of coffee and personality themed double entendres) with an incredibly beautiful melody and achingly tender vocals had me buckling after one listen. After falling for that song, I was clamoring for more material from Angel, and when she subsequently released Love Travels shortly after, I was not disappointed. The rest of the album is full of her piano driven pop that is just a pleasure from the beginning through to the end (with her strongest tracks opening and closing the album; smart move on her part). My only complaint, is that there are moments where she bears a very strong similarity to one of my favorite female singer-song writers, Sara Bareilles, and that striking similarity (especially the track Not Even Human, which is undoubtedly, one of Taylor’s best) takes something just a little something away from her originality. However, that being said, if you love Sara Bareilles, you will probably then love Angel Taylor as well; so really, it’s a win/win if you think about it. Overall, Love Travels is a beautifully orchestrated piano-pop album, filled to the brim with delightful melodies about love and longing. Standout Tracks: Chai Tea Latte, Not Even Human, Maple Tree, Lightning Strikes.

20: Eulogies – Here Anonymous
This album came out of complete left field for me. I first heard of the Eulogies back in August, when I saw the super cute video for the great first single Two Can Play from their sophomore album Here Anonymous (which is actually a sweet duet featuring Nikki Monniger of the Silversun Pickups). After I fell in love with that delightful song, I wanted to hear more, and I am glad I did; Here Anonymous is a fabulous alternative rock album, driven by sweet melodies, slick arrangements, and delightful vocals. They really remind me a lot of Peter Bjorn and John, with the added sweetness and delight of bands like The Weepies and She & Him, in the way that they layer each track, and how they weave in such catchy choruses to carry almost every song on the album. This album was a great random find for me in 2009, and I’m surprised I’m not seeing it on more year end lists; this band deserves a lot more attention, especially when you consider the overall greatness of Here Anonymous. Standout Tracks: Two Can Play, Eyes On The Prize, Day To Day, How To Be Alone.

5SF: august 14

For today’s selection, I decided to go back through some artists that I may have featured in the past. The thing is, that they have more than one good song, and deserve to be featured again, because sometimes, it isn’t enough to say something nice only once.

Stars – Barricade
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_814_stars-barricade.mp3]
I posted about Stars about a year and a half ago, and their brilliant track, Take Me To The the Riot. Well recently, I was listening to my ipod on shuffle (as I now seem to do quite often), and the achingly beautiful Barricade came on. This song really makes me wonder why I don’t listen to Stars more often than I do, because it is truly a beautiful song; as are many of their others. The juxtaposition between the gentle, and peaceful music and the dark, violent lyrics is extremely captivating, and really highlights the talent of this marvelous band. Again, I really should listen to them more often.

Daughtry – Life After You
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_814_daughtry-lifeafteryou.mp3]
Back in 2006, Daughtry’s self-titled debut ended up making my year end favorites list, and since then, it has been way too overplayed on the radio (Seriously!). However, when Daughtry announced they were releasing their sophomore album later this summer, I couldn’t resist at least giving it a listen when it came out. I was happy to find this amazing track on my first listen, that reminded me why I pulled for this hottie on American Idol. He truly has singing talent, and given the arrangement of this song, he has some skill at making the music to go with it as well.

Band Of Skulls – Cold Fame
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_814_bandofskulls-coldfame.mp3]
It has barely been a month since I posted about Band of Skulls, and after listening to their most recent release, Baby Darling Doll Face Honey, I felt compelled to bring more of their amazing music into the spotlight. The influences on this track go back several decades, and it serves as another great example of the amazing music they are making. The whole album is very, very good, and after one listen, I was glad that I checked out more than just the lead single, I Know What I Am. Overall, BDDFH is a great album that I am sure to listen to more and more in the coming months.

Joshua Radin – One Of Those Days
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_814_joshuaradin-oneofthosedays.mp3]
My love for Joshua Radin began when I heard his tear-inducing track, Today. Since that time, he released an album, which ended up making my year end list in 2008. This song came back up recently on a session of shuffle, and I fell back in love with it; even more so than the first time. I love Joshua’s style of acoustic rock, and his lyrics completely make me weak in the knees. Definitely an artist I will continue to watch from now on.

Greg Laswell – And Then You
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_814_greglaswell-andthenyou.mp3]
I posted about Greg just a couple of weeks ago, and I can’t get enough of his beautiful music (beautiful is apparently the word of the day). His sound is noticeably similar to Mat Kearney, but he is unique enough to garner attention of his own. He’s cute, makes beautiful music, and I couldn’t be happier that I found him; which is why I wanted to post more about him. If you liked either of the two songs that I posted, you must download his album Three Flights From Alto Nido, the whole album is fantastic.

Well, there are five great songs by five great artists; all of which I have mentioned before, and felt the need to mention again because of how great they are. I hope that you enjoyed them! Let me know what you think!

5SF: july 10

I’m back!! Sorry about last week, but having a day off really makes wanting to blog slip into the forgotten areas of my mind; that, and I was driving all over Atlanta looking for a pool. Well, the pool should be ready next week, and I am ALMOST finished with BOTH bathrooms, so I am getting pretty excited about several things. But enough about that… we are here for the music, right? So let’s get right to it, shall we?

The Low Anthem – Charlie Darwin
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_710_thelowanthem-charliedarwin.mp3]
Every once and a while, I come across a song so amazing and beautiful, that it literally gives me chills. This is one of those songs. The delicate guitar picking, the haunting vocals, and the gentle-folk quality of this song are pure perfection. The vocal arrangements of the singers is almost choir-like in its nature, but instead of sounding like church music, it comes across as a beautiful ballad with intricacies that make this a truly amazing find. I love it when I come across songs like this, and I realize I have stumbled onto something incredibly beautiful; which unfortunately, doesn’t happen very often. I couldn’t wait to post about this one!

Marina and the Diamonds – I Am Not A Robot
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_710_marinaandthediamonds-iamnotarobot.mp3]
Here is yet another song that I randomly stumbled onto this past week that completely took me by storm. I discovered Marina and the Diamonds by watching the the video of this song (be sure to go and check it out here) on a music blog, and while I instantly loved the song, I was struck by two things instantly: one, how much she reminds me of Imogen Heap, and two, how much she looks like Kelly Clarkson (and Rebecca Romijn from the X-Men movies when she’s got all those sparklies on)! Add to those great things the amazingly-catchy chorus, and total fun of this track, and you have a hit on your hands!! I can’t wait to see what else Marina and the Diamonds have in store for their upcoming album release; if it’s anything like this, I know I’ll love it!

Grizzly Bear – Two Weeks
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_710_grizzlybear-twoweeks.mp3]
I don’t know what it is about this song that I love so much; the throw back sound, the weirdness of the oooo’s and ahhh’s, or the quirkiness of the track in general. It reminds me of bands like The Shins, Peter Bjorn and John, and even Vampire Weekend; all of which posses that interesting weird-ish quirk that intrigues me, and in this case, makes me love it. I saw how much hype was surrounding these guys earlier this year, and I scoffed at the time, but after hearing Two Weeks, I am definitely going to reconsider my position.

VV Brown – Shark In The Water
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_710_vvbrown-sharkinthewater.mp3]
What do you get when you take the vocals of someone very similar to Amy Winehouse, and instead of a throwback sound, you mix it with an truly danceable, pop-rock with almost and island feel to it? Why, you get this song!! I instantly loved the energy and the amazing vocal prowess VV Brown conveys in this massive song. I am sure that the UK radio will be burning up this track this summer (too bad it most likely will NOT make it to radio over here); as well as whatever is attached to my ipod.

Band Of Skulls – I Know What I Am
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_710_bandofskulls-iknowwhatiam.mp3]
This song instantly struck me for its hat tip to the intense side of classic rock, but stood out because of the unique pairing of the male and female vocals. The song literally sounds to me like Chrissie Hynde joined the White Stripes; and in the process, made a fucking kick ass single. I am definitely keeping my ears open for whatever comes next from Band of Skulls, because this song is truly fantastic (I haven’t gotten to the rest of the album yet… so many songs coming on my radar right now!!!). Also, is it just me, or is the drumming on this track like a sick, amazing heartbeat-like rhythm that begs to be danced to?

Well, there’s another 5SF for you guys… what did you think? Please let me know, and tell me what you are listening to in return! I hope you found these tracks just as amazing as I did, because this week, there was all kinds of greatness going on!!!
