5SF: november 20

Thank goodness it’s Friday; it means the weekend is almost here, and it also means that new music is coming your way via the 5SF! Today, there is a little bit of a celebration of the letter A; seeing as all of the songs featured today, are by artists whose names start with A (well, at least in some part). The A game was not intentional on my part, but hey, I’ll run with it; sometimes having an angle makes things more exciting. Let’s get down to business, shall we?

Amerie – Heard ‘Em All
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1120_amerie-heardemall.mp3]
I’ll admit I wasn’t a fan of Amerie at first. I initially found 1 Thing slightly off-putting because of the intensity, and the way she basically screamed the song at you. Well, a few years later, I heard the brilliant Take Control (which was on her last record, that apparently, wasn’t released in the US), which gave me new respect for Amerie; which translated into me even beginning to enjoy the (actually quite amazing) 1 Thing. Naturally, when I noticed that Amerie had released her new album In Love and War earlier this month (and especially after hearing this banging lead single) I had to check it out. There are several great tracks on it, and I have been playing this one in particular on repeat. Amerie’s music has a feel to it that lets you know it’s her right off the bat, and songs like this make me want to get out of my seat and dance around. The layered big band instruments and booming bass make this a track that is just begging to fill dance floors. The energy in this track is high, and with this new single, Amerie has come back to the States stronger than ever.

Alexandra Burke – Bad Boys
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1120_alexandraburke-badboys.mp3]
The first time I heard this song was a little over a month ago, and initially, while I did like it, I wasn’t blown away by it. However, after several subsequent listens, it has grown on me, and I have been enjoying this guilty pleasure more and more with each spin. This is one of those songs that would fit perfectly on US pop radio, but because it is a UK artist, the chances of that happening are ever so slim. However, I read that Alexandra (who won X-Factor last year, the year after Leona Lewis; one Brit who famously did make it to the top of the US pop charts) is actively working with several big names in the US music industry, in order to get her more exposure on this side of the pond. Only time will tell, but having Flo-Rida in the song certainly bodes well for her potentially topping charts in the states at some point in the near future (not that Flo-Rida is in any way a draw to this song for me whatsoever).

Adam Lambert – For Your Entertainment
audio removed
Alright, ladies and gents, here is the first single from American Idol runner up, Adam Lambert’s debut album of the same name (which is out next Tuesday). While I do admit that I was skeptical at first (seems to be a theme today) of this track, I realized that for me, it was in large part due to the hype surrounding Adam’s impending debut. I was a major fan of him on the show, mainly, because love him or hate him, there is absolutely no denying that this guy has some major singing talent. However, the pressure that winning or coming in second on AI puts on that contestant’s first release after the show is staggering; and given history, unfortunately equally disappointing. There have been very few American Idol alums that have truly delivered for me, and as such, I was nervous about what Adam would do with his debut. After giving this track enough of a chance to allow the stink of over-hype to wear off, I will say that I am definitely more optimistic about Adam’s debut album; the track is a real grower, and really highlights his insane singing voice. We’ll have to see if the rest of the album delivers, but for now, I’m definitely more excited to see what he has in store for us on Tuesday.

Lady Antebellum – Need You Now
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1120_ladyantebellum-needyounow.mp3]
I’ll admit, I don’t really like posting “big hits”; especially if they are in the top of the iTunes/Billboard charts. I enjoy focusing these 5SFs on stuff that people may not have heard before, or stuff that you might miss because its brilliance was (or would probably go on to be) vastly overlooked. There are notable exceptions (ahem, Lady GaGa’s Bad Romance last week), but for the most part, posting what’s burning up the charts (and the radio) isn’t the central point of these 5SFs. This may seem like a tangent, but I felt like I needed to clarify, because this is another notable exception; a song that I discovered because it was the top of the iTunes singles chart. I have heard of Lady Antebellum, but never really heard any of their music; mostly because I am not what I would consider a huge fan of country music. However, after seeing this song soar to the top of the singles chart, I had to least give it a listen, and least hear what it was about this track that made so many people want to buy it. After watching the video (ahem… the lead male singer is HOT), I instantly heard why it would jump to the top of that singles chart; this song is incredibly beautiful, the lyrics are eloquent, and the arrangement is masterfully crafted. I love the sweet and tender elements of this song, and I am glad that I gave it a listen; especially because of the fact that it’s unlikely I would have heard it otherwise. Sometimes, you find something at the top of the charts that you haven’t heard, and sometimes, it turns out to be wonderful; this is definitely one of those times.

David Gray feat. Annie Lennox – Full Steam
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1120_davidgray-fullsteam.mp3]
I found out about this collaboration from my friend Gregor, when he posted a video for the song on his facebook page. I actually downloaded the new David Gray CD, when it came out a while back, but because it wasn’t really meshing with me for whatever reason, I never got all of the way through it. It just so happens, that this is the last song on the CD, so I never heard it before seeing his post. Well, I’m glad that I gave it another listen, because Gregor introduced me to a truly beautiful collaboration by two extremely talented artists. I have been a fan of Annie Lennox for as long as I can remember, so seeing her name attached, only piqued my interest in the song that much more. I love the juxtaposition of their two very different vocals, and the inherent “David Gray” nature of the song (the something about all of his music that makes it almost unmistakably him) suits the pairing wonderfully. Thanks for pointing out this amazing gem of a song, Gregor!

So, there’s another set of songs for you to digest this week. Be sure to not only let me know what you thought (comments are love, people!), but also what you are listening to, and any suggestions for future 5SFs! Have a great weekend!

5SF: november 13

First up today, let’s take a look at a truly inspiring story from what I can only describe as a true example of what our nation’s youth should aspire to be like. That kid has some courage. I wish there were more like him; maybe someday he will be the majority, and we can all share in equal civil rights in this country. Here’s hoping! Thanks Will! You rock!

Now, I have some AMAZING songs for you today. One of them, I have literally been clamoring FOR WEEKS to get to post about! Without further adieu, here we go!

Will Young – Hopes and Fears
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1113_willyoung-hopesandfears.mp3]
It’s time for some well placed gushing ladies and gents! This song is completely, utterly, and fantastically amazing. This is the new single from Will’s upcoming release, The Hits, and it is definitely one of his best songs ever; how fitting that it would be recorded for his first greatest hits compilation. Will nearly took the top spot in my best of CD countdown last year, and my love for everything Will Young certainly hasn’t diminished in the slightest. So I guess you can imagine my excitement when I heard that he would be releasing new material this year; even if it was only going to be a little bit of new stuff for a greatest hits compilation. Well, one listen of his new single, and it seems my excitement was well placed. From Will’s consistently beautiful vocals, to the absolutely amazing arrangement, to the clever video (what time would have more Hopes and Fears attached to it than being pregnant?! Brilliant!), this song is the whole package. After the first listen, I knew that I loved this song, and I am more than excited to feature it this week. This song has been on major repeat for me, and I just cannot get enough of it; it is amazing. I hope you enjoy it as much as I certainly do!!

Lady GaGa – Bad Romance
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1113_ladygaga-badromance.mp3]
I was torn about posting a Lady GaGa song this week (since by now, everyone and their mother is sure to have heard it), but given the video’s release this week, and how good this track is, I couldn’t ignore it. When I started talking about her, it didn’t seem like many people cared, but slowly, everyone seemed to come into the Haus of GaGa. A little over a year later, and she is a bona fide pop sensation that seems to somehow be picking up even MORE steam. As I hinted at above, this week, the internet has been all a flutter because of the release of her AMAZING video for Bad Romance, the new single off of her (not a reissue after all!) new, upcoming album, The Fame Monster. Lady GaGa took me by storm when I first heard Just Dance, and I am glad to see that she is still working her ass off in bringing the true quality goods of pop music to the table. Not only does she nail it with her innovative take on pop, but she kills it with fashion and the video as well (I would personally like to shake Mr. Alexander McQueen’s hand for those ridiculously AMAZING shoes in the video too; dude, you are a genius of fashion. Those shoes at 3:30 make me want to be a lady JUST so I can wear them. Amazing). Lady GaGa is a pop phenomenon, and if you weren’t paying attention by now, I have to ask, “what is wrong with you?”; the Haus of GaGa has certainly set up permanent residence, and pop music is all the better for it.

JLS – Everybody In Love
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1113_jls-everybodyinlove.mp3]
It should come as no surprise to my regular readers of the 5SF that I love British pop music, and after hearing this song in BBC Radio 1, I was reminded of just why I love it so much. This song is incredibly catchy, and the chorus will be stuck in your head for hours after hearing it. I only heard of JLS a few weeks ago; apparently, I missed out on their first single, Beat Again, when it was released a few months back. However, with the release of this new single (which is an official UK number one!) that coincided with the release of their self-titled debut last week, it seems that I couldn’t ignore them any longer. While the jury is still out on the rest of the album, this song is getting constant play on my ipod. This song reminds me A LOT of the great pop ballad-type anthems made popular by the Backstreet Boys back in their hay-day (I’m thinking of perhaps their biggest song, I Want It That Way). JLS may have come in second on last year’s X-Factor, but by the sound of things, they are doing quite well for themselves post-X-factor in 2009.

Biffy Clyro – The Captain
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1113_biffyclyro-thecaptain.mp3]
This has been a good year for finding rock bands from the UK (Band of Skulls, Glasvegas and, White Lies to name a few). When I first heard this song, I thought it was Snow Patrol, because the lead singer’s vocals in this song have a very similar sound to the lead singer of Snow Patrol. To my surprise, it was actually Biffy Clyro (who’s lead singer is Scottish), who I have heard of, but I had actually never heard anything by before. My interest was peaked, because I have had some experience with Biffy Clyro, because the lead singer is a part of a side project called Marmaduke Duke; whom I posted about in a previous 5SF back in April, after falling in love with their AMAZING single Rubber Lover. While I unfortunately didn’t fall for Marmaduke Duke’s album as much as I did for Rubber Lover, I have found a new found interest in Biffy Clyro with this song, and subsequently, their new release Only Revolutions (which is quite good throughout!). This is a great, very catchy single, and I am glad that it got me into a band that I doubt I would have ever paid attention to, had it not been for this great song.

The Swell Season – Paper Cup
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1113_theswellseason-papercup.mp3]
To say that I was excited for the release of the new album by The Swell Season would be quite an understatement. However, and somewhat unfortunately, the hype must have gotten to me, because I have had a difficult time really getting into it since it was released a few weeks ago. That being said, this song was an instant stand out, mostly because of the beautiful arrangement, and the intricacy with which they weave the melody throughout the chorus. The gentle guitar picking, and the beautiful deep bass, all overlain with the distorted keyboard, comes together to create something truly gorgeous. Add to that the sweet and sensitive vocals of Glen Handsard, and what’s not to love? Nothing, I tell you. This is definitely one of the best tracks off their new album; and perhaps shining some attention on it this week will motivate me to keep trying to get into the rest of Strict Joy (which is good, but I think I hyped it up so high that there was no way I wouldn’t be let down at least a little).

Well, there’s your 5 song Friday for this week; what did you think? As always, let me know not only what you thought of this week’s selection, but also what you are listening to. If there is something that I am missing out on that is a must hear, please, do share!

5SF: november 6

Making a triumphant return to its regularly scheduled day, the 5 Song Friday is back with some great new music for you this week. Let’s just dive right in, shall we?

Chase & Status – End Credits
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_116_chaseandstatus-endcredits.mp3]
Holy mother of drum & bass, Batman!! Seriously, if you are a fan of drum & bass, this may be your new anthem. The track is immensely beautiful in its execution. I haven’t followed drum & bass since I was in high school, so I was quite surprised when I heard a drum & bass song on the radio; although it was BBC Radio 1, which kind of makes sense (they play a lot of stuff that “mainstream radio” wouldn’t touch). Since hearing it, I have been clamoring to get this track so I could feature it on a 5SF; this song is HUGE. I especially love the elegant melody, beautiful vocal, sharp snare, and full bass; you really need to do yourself a favor and listen to it with a really good set of speakers, because the bass really commands the true grandness of this song. I had personally never heard of Chase & Status before hearing this, but I am all ears now; especially if they keep making music this brilliant.

The Avett Brothers – I and Love and You

[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_116_theavettbrothers-iandloveandyou.mp3]
I heard some buzz about these guys, and after noticing they were fellow beard enthusiasts, I looked (and listened) a little more at what they had to offer. After hearing this track, I have to say that I am glad that I gave their music a listen. This song is an excellent example of how simplicity and beauty in the arrangement, coupled with strong imagery and beautiful vocals can make for truly amazing music. I especially love the sincerity of the line that is the namesake of the song, Three words that became hard to say/I and love and you, and the way in which the singer delivers it. If for no other reason than that line, I LOVE this song; sometimes, an attention to detail is all it takes for me to fall head over heels with something, and that has certainly happened in this case.

Matt Alber – Walk With Me
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_116_mattalber-walkwithme.mp3]
What can I say; I’m a sucker for a beautiful man with a beautiful voice. I have posted a few songs from Matt Alber’s debut, Monarch, in the past, and just this week, I stumbled back onto his album, and I couldn’t resist posting about him again. The tonal quality of his voice literally makes me weak in the knees, and the delicate way in which he weaves in and out of those harmonies is magical. I have my hopes that there will be a new album from Matt very soon. As I said in the past, his debut was kind of a conflict for me, because there are some AMAZING songs on it, but there are more than a couple filler tracks that really drug it down. That being said, when you go back and listen to the stand out numbers, those tracks show a level of talent and an beacon of extremely great promise from this out gay artist. When he nails it, he does so beautifully and effortlessly; and boy does he nail it with this song.

Melee – Can’t Hold On
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/melee-cantholdon.mp3]
Here’s another blast from the not-so-distant past; Melee’s amazing debut album, Devils and Angels made my top ten of 2007, coming in firmly at number 7. I recently stumbled back onto this great track from their debut while my ipod was on shuffle, which got me wondering what these guys are up to these days. A little searching on the internets, and I was able to track down their twitter; which seems to be about the only place they are currently active on the net (at least they are still doing stuff, and haven’t unceremoniously broken up/moved on!!). This song still maintains the freshness it did the first time I heard it, and it was nice to pay some attention to these fellas again; it has been too long, and I need some more Melee in my life. Here’s hoping a new album comes our way in the not-so-distant future. In the meantime, soak up the amazingness of this gem.

The Refreshments – Banditos
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_116_therefreshments-banditos.mp3]
This is the song that almost got away. You may recall, that quite some time ago, I had a revival of 90’s songs that I loved back in the day, and I never managed to rediscover all of them due to how much time had passed, and the fading of distant memories. I remember loving this song imensely when I was in high school, and I could vaguely remember that there was a pin up girl on the cover, but I could never remember the name or any of the words of the song. That drove me crazy. I had all but given up finding this elusive track, when this past week, James and I were out to dinner, and it started playing in the restaurant. I couldn’t believe it! Suddenly, it all came rushing back, and I downloaded this great song as soon as I got home. I couldn’t resist posting this today, because re-finding this song was just too perfect not to share. I just love how random life can be sometimes!

What did you think of the Friday five this week? Anything you want to see featured here that you are listening to, but I seem to keep missing? Please, let me know! Have a great weekend, and keep the music playing!!

5SS: october 31

So here’s the deal: I was extremely busy all week trying to get my school work finished so I could enjoy this weekend without worrying about how to fit all of that work in with my Pride/Halloween plans. I managed to finish everything yesterday, but the 5SF got cut because of it. However, there are NO rules against doing it a day late! So here’s the first, and hopefully last 5SS; 5SF’s will go back to their regularly scheduled day after this week! Now, let’s get to the music!

The Saturdays – Here Standing
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1031_thesaturdays-herestanding.mp3]
I know that I was gushing about how Lose Control was the best song on the new album by the Saturdays, and while it is AMAZING, I think I might have been wrong. THIS is the best song their new album. It is amazing. It evokes the same feeling of another amazing track, No Air, and has me breathless after each listen. I still cannot get over how amazing their sophomore album is; it is even better that their debut (which was stellar, btw). The Saturdays have made some brilliant pop, and this is sitting pretty atop the rest right now; this song is epic, and totally beautiful. I am PRAYING that they release this as a single, because there is no way that it wouldn’t be number one. Seriously, this song is EPIC. BRILLIANT. AMAZING. LOTS OF WORDS IN ALL CAPITAL LETTERS. This record is amazing, and I can’t seem to say it enough.

Kaci Battaglia – Crazy Possessive
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1031_kacibattaglia-crazypossessive.mp3]
WARNING: This song says fuck in it like 65 times; you have been warned. I opted not to go for the radio-friendly version, because I love the tenacity with which she screams fuck in each threatening line of the chorus. This song is a total guilty pleasure, one that uses an arrangement that borrows heavily from Soft Cell’s Tainted Love; but it is almost as if she borrowed the arrangement from Rihanna’s SOS, which borrowed its arrangement from Soft Cell. Interesting. The result is a great back beat with a fierce song about fucking up a bitch who comes after your man. Don’t fuck with Kaci; she’ll cut a bitch!

Ke$ha – TiK ToK
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1031_kesha-tiktok.mp3]
GUILTY PLEASURE ALERT: I resisted the shit out of this song. No way was I going to concede and like someone who thought it was cute to spell her name with a dollar sign in it. However, far too many of you suggested this song to me to ignore it any longer; and what better time to post it during Pride weekend. This song is a true banger, and I am sure that it will be loved by gay boys all over; including this one. Yes ladies and gents, I give in. I love this ghetto fabulous track by Miss Kesha… I’m sorry, I mean Ke$ha. Ugh, I still don’t like that, though. Also, what the hell is up with the line, Now, the dudes are lining up cause they hear we got swagger/But we kick em to the curb unless they look like Mick Jagger? Someone needs to let this little cutie know that she can do better than guys that look like tired old Mick. I’m just saying; Ke$ha, don’t sell yourself short, doll.

Cascada – Evacuate the Dancefloor
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1031_cascada-evacuatethedancefloor.mp3]
LOOK! IT’S THE GAYEST VERSION OF JUST DANCE SINCE JUST DANCE! Seriously, I tried really hard not to like this complete rip on Lady GaGa’s amazing first single, Just Dance, but I just couldn’t resist. Cascada has danced her way into my heart again, and I just can’t resist any longer. Yes, this song is pretty much a spot on remake of Just Dance; it follows the exact same formula that Lady GaGa perfected with Just Dance. However, isn’t imitation the sincerest form of flattery? If that’s the case, Cascada LOVES her some Lady GaGa, and she made this little homage so we could all get out on the floor and keep the dance party going. I have been playing this one for a few months now, probably way more often than I should, and I thought it was perfect for a Pride 5SF, so here it is. You win again, Cascada! Gays rejoice! Dance music for the masses!!

Lisa Scott-Lee – Electric
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1031_lisascott-lee-electric.mp3]
Oh how much I love Lisa Scott-Lee; let me count the ways… a song consisting of nothing but hyper sexual double entendres, the fact that she was in the amazing pop super group Steps, and THIS… oh Lisa. This song should have been a massive hit when it was released back in 2005, but probably due to the stink that was still left on everyone’s mind about the break up of Steps, it tanked. She probably shouldn’t have promised to quit the music business if it failed, but she did, and well, it did. Regardless of the stink that surrounded this song, I have always loved it, and wanted to feature it this week; especially since I have been paying more deserved attention since reviving it during the British pop explosion I did a few weeks back. I have say, I do think it’s interesting (as D’Luv pointed out last year) that this song got cloned and turned out to be a moderate hit for Ms. Jackson, which I guess speaks to cyclical nature of the music biz. I hope the Lisa Scott-Lee reemerges someday and gives another brilliant pop gem like this one. I know of at least a couple other gay boys that would be rejoicing right along with me.

Well, I want to apologize for getting this to you a day late, but it’s better late than never. I couldn’t go another week without giving you something to listen to. I hope that everyone has a happy Halloween, and a very happy Pride weekend if you are in Atlanta. Let me know what you thought of this week’s selections, and as always, tell me what you are listening to as well! Take care!

5SF: october 16

TGIF. This has been a four day week for me, but for whatever reason, every hour has felt like two, and it just seemed to go by really slowly. A good thing did come out of it, though, I found some AMAZING new songs to feature today, and I can’t wait for you to hear them. Let’s get started!

30 Seconds to Mars – Kings and Queens
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1016_30secondstomars-kingsandqueens.mp3]
I have been known to gush incessantly about some songs, but I try my best to reserve that for those that I am totally and utterly blow away by. Well, ladies and gents, this is one of those songs, and I am going to nothing short of tell everyone I know about this one. This song is immensely beautiful, and the arrangement is perfect. It is so good that I have to admit that I was actually kind of surprised by it. While I really liked their last album, this towers so high over anything they have done so far, that there really is no way that it wouldn’t take a fan even more diehard than myself by surprise. Don’t get me wrong, this is not a dig in any way to their previous work; they have some brilliant and amazing stuff out there already, but this song hits like the ultimate crescendo. Jared Leto’s voice soars alongside the building riffs and sends chills up my spine when he hits those high notes and sustains them so pitch perfectly. This takes everything they have done before and perfects it. I can’t heap enough praise on this track, and I cannot wait until their new album comes out; because if it is anything like this, it is going to be utterly brilliant. Simply put: AMAZING.

Robbie Williams – Bodies
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1016_robbiewilliams-bodies.mp3]
I had a bit of a twitter/facebook snafu yesterday when I proclaimed my love for this song; when I accidentally said I liked Robin Williams’ Bodies. Well, let’s clear that up; THIS is the Bodies that I am heaping my praise on (well, I wouldn’t mind heaping some praise on Robbie Williams’ (not Robin Williams) actual body, but that is topic for another time and another place). Overall, whenever Robbie releases a new single, I always want to like it, and sometimes I do, but when I first heard Bodies, I didn’t. I think it was the hard distortion sound that accompanies the beat that turned me off at first. However, I have heard it a few times, and now I see how wrong I was; this song is beautiful and I actually love the hard distortion completely now! I realize now that I didn’t give it the chance that it so rightly deserves. This song is catchy, the arrangement is excellent, and Robbie’s voice is as beautiful as ever.

The Saturdays – Lose Control
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1016_thesaturdays-losecontrol.mp3]
I don’t know which part I am in the most awe over, that the Saturdays released a whole new album just a year after their really great debut album, Chasing Lights, or that it’s probably an even better album than their first. Take this song for instance. Wow. Let me say that again, because it bears repeating, WOW. These girls have clearly taken all of the thunder both Girls Aloud and the (possibly new defunct?) Sugababes once had, and have channeled that tenacity into truly fantastic girl-group driven pop. I will admit that while the ho-hum first single (I’m not saying Forever is Over is bad necessarily, it just isn’t as good as every other thing they have done, IMHO), and the weird title (Wordshaker) of this album had me less than interested in downloading it, BUT after a few listens, I have to say that there isn’t a bad track on their new album. This song in particular blew me away, and I instantly wanted to hear it again once it ended. These ladies have proven to be some work horses, quickly and consistently turning out great pop albums, and based on the quality of work they keep releasing, I certainly hope they can sustain this momentum for a long time to come. Let’s just say that I have a strong feeling that their new album will be included in 2009’s annual countdown of my favorite albums.

Nelly Furtado – Manos Al Aire
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1016_nellyfurtado-manosalaire.mp3]
Some of you probably wonder why in the hell I would be posting a Spanish song, but trust me, this song took me by much more surprise than you could possibly have for me featuring it. I have had a love hate relationship with Nelly Furtado; mostly, I LOVE all of her older stuff that I felt was more “her style”, and I practically HATE everything she did with Timbaland. I remember when Promiscuous came out, and I really liked it at first. However, that quickly turned to disdain, because with each subsequent single, I felt the Nelly I instantly fell in love with back in 2001 with I’m Like a Bird was completely gone. That troubled me, and as such, I kind of started ignoring her. It wasn’t until I saw the video (I HIGHLY recommend you go and watch it) for Manos Al Aire (with subtitles!), that I remembered why I fell in love with her in the first place. I LOVE the arrangement of the song (old Nelly is back!), the vocals are spot on, and the writing (both the Spanish, and their translation) is beautiful. I have always thought Nelly was a great song writer, and with this song, she has gotten back to her roots; and most importantly, shown me that there is still more to her than Timbaland’s productions. Whatever language she sings in, Nelly Furtado has proven to me once again, that she is a talented musician.

Katharine McPhee – Say Goodbye

[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1016_katharinemcphee-saygoodbye.mp3]
Even though I am a fan of American Idol, I can’t say that there are many of those kids that I avidly kept following after they left the show. Katharine McPhee is one of the notable exceptions. After delivering an amazing, if not totally ignored (well, except by me, of course), debut album, she was dropped from her record label. Thankfully, she got herself a new record deal. While I was lukewarm about the first single, Had It All, I was instantly reminded of why I love Katharine so much with Say Goodbye; her singing is effortless. Honestly, I think it is a shame that she isn’t as famous as other female singers that can deliver the caliber of performance she has consistently delivered. This song is incredibly beautiful in tone, arrangement, writing, and of course, Katharine’s effortlessly delivered vocal. She may not have won her season of American Idol, but she definitely won a fan for life in me. I can’t wait for Unbroken to be released early next year.

So there’s your Friday five for this week. What did you think? Please let me know!! Also, please let me know what you are listening to; I’ve always got my ear out for wonderful music!

5SF: october 9 (British pop edition!)

Thanks to Stuart playing all kinds of wonderful cheesy British pop from the early 00s at Mary’s last weekend, I have been in the mood for more, more, more all week. I decided to make a play list of some of my favorites, and as the list started to get pretty long, I realized that there are some great pop songs out there from the not so distant past that deserve to be shared. Due to the fact that I am practically in British pop overload as a result of making the list, I thought it would be fun to have a 5SF that is totally focused on the excellent cheesy pop music that hails from the UK from the earlier part of this decade.

Clea – I Surrender
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_109_clea-isurrender.mp3]
Clea were a band that came together after the girls met each other during the auditioning process for Pop Stars: The Rivals. While they didn’t win, they managed to release some pretty great pop music together. Clea had some issues with getting an album out, but when they finally did, it was filled with cheesy pop that has been a guilty pleasure of mine for years. This is my favorite song from the album Trinity, and even though Clea are long gone from the music scene, I still absolutely love this song. It is dance-tastic, and is just the type of cheesy British pop that I can’t get enough of right now.

Rachel Stevens – Knock On Wood
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_109_rachelstevens-knockonwood.mp3]
Rachel was in a fantastically cheesy-but-brilliant pop band called S Club 7 (who I completely and utterly adore!), and after the band broke up (*sad face*), she went out on her own, and released some pretty great solo stuff. Anyone who has been following this blog for a while now knows that I am a sucker for a great cover song, and this one is nothing short of fantastic (even though it isn’t on any of her albums!). Surprisingly, they actually played this on So You Think You Can Dance (last year I think) during a disco routine, and at the time, I was reminded of how much I love Rachel, and miss her contributions to pop music. My recent resurgence of interest in early 00s pop music wouldn’t be complete without a little love for Rachel and the rest of the S Club crew.

V – Can You Feel It?
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_109_v-canyoufeelit.mp3]
As is the case with many British pop bands, the formula of releasing cover songs is pretty much a standard, and V are no exception to the rule (this is a cover of The Jackson 5’s hit of the same name). However, even though it is a cover, it is cheesy boy-band pop at its BEST (which is probably why that formula is followed so predictably). Around the time the US was pining over The Backstreet Boys and N*SYNC, the UK had a slew of boy bands popping up left, right, and center. V was one of the bands that managed to have a few hits, only to disappear into near obscurity overnight. It’s interesting to me, that right now, there is another band brandishing the letter V in their name (who were actually featured on a previous 5SF), doing almost the same type of music. I hope they can last a little longer than this great boy band did, because this song showed enormous potential; again, a great cover song will win me over practically every time (I’m looking at you Mariah!!).

Emma Bunton – Maybe
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_109_emmabunton-maybe.mp3]
Many of you probably know Emma better by her stage name, Baby Spice; a name that she was given to her when she was in the Spice Girls. However, a lot of you might not know that every one of the Spice Girls kept working on music once the band broke up (a lot of it is brilliant!), and Emma’s second solo album is one of the best of the bunch; there isn’t a bad song on it. Emma was on the early end of the currently growing trend to harness a throwback sound; and in her case, as exhibited by the theme of this album, it was the swanky sound of pop music from the 60s. She had moderate attention in the states with her hit Free Me, which was remixed and made some waves on the dance scene, but Maybe was always my favorite from the album. Hearing this again made me realize just how much I love that whole album, and I’m glad to feature it today as one of my all time favorite British pop songs.

Steps – Stomp
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_109_steps-stomp.mp3]
Arguably one of the biggest of the songs featured on today’s 5SF, this massive song by pop super group Steps pretty much embodies the uber cheesy heart of British pop of the early 00s. Steps were insanely huge when they were making music, and caused quite a stink with their fans when they disbanded; mostly because they had reassured everyone they wouldn’t when the rumors of a break up started flying. Because I didn’t find out about Steps until after they disbanded, I was shielded from any bad feelings about them, which is good, because I truly love some Steps. They are like a cheesy ABBA disco tribute band gone completely over the edge with bubble gum pop goodness. This is my favorite song by Steps, and it really is a shame that they didn’t continue on, because they made some really great pop music together. I’ve always thought this song was the perfect song for a Friday, because it’s all about getting ready for the weekend, so I thought it really worked for today.

I have thoroughly enjoyed bringing you some of my favorite cheesy British pop songs today. Reaching back into the vault of music that I own is often very fun; especially when I take a nostalgic trip down the pantheon of British pop that I own. I sorted through a huge pile of CDs making the play list that inspired today’s 5SF, and I will definitely say that it was really hard to choose just five. However, I think I picked some great ones, and I tried to pick ones that people might not have ever heard, and ones that they should. I hope you enjoyed them. Let me know what you thought, and if you have any suggestions of British pop that I must hear, please, do tell! Overall, what did you think of this week’s theme and selections? Should I do more fun British pop from the early 00s? I have tons!

5SF: october 2

Welcome back to the weekly blogcast of the 5 song Friday! I hope everyone is having a swell day, and I hope these 5 tracks make good even better. Now… on with the show.

Hellogoodbye – When We First Met
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_102_hellogoodbye-whenwefirstmet.mp3]
It is with great excitement that I bring you the BRAND NEW single from Hellogoodbye!! When We First Met marks a triumphant return to producing great pop for Hellogoodbye, and if this is any indication as to what we can expect from their next release, my longing for new material from them might have been worth the wait. I have been a fan of Hellogoodbye ever since I fell in love with their full length debut, Monsters! Aliens! Dinosaurs! Vampires! way back in 2006 (!!!). Then, after seeing them in concert, I fell even more head over heels for them, and have been clamoring for the chance to get some new music from these guys; and (not that it’s a bad thing, I just want a new album!) all I’ve gotten (until this week) was a re-issue of MADV with some extra tracks. While this track is a little less “electro-pop” than most of their debut, it shows them moving in a great direction (channeling their softer, sweeter side they showed on Oh, It’s Love), and I, for one, find myself even more excited for a new album from this bunch. You can get a copy of the When We First Met mini EP by signing up at their website.

Rosi Golan feat William Fitzsimmons – Hazy (download it here!!!)
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_102_rosigolan-hazy.mp3]
I have featured songs on the 5SF before that I heard playing in the background of a show before, and this is one of those tracks. Those of you that watched the season premiere of Dollhouse will probably recognize this one; it was played during the first 10 or so minutes of the season premiere, and I loved it so much I had to have it. Luckily, a quick google search of the lyrics, and I was in business. I love the lyrics, and the delicate arrangement. When I first heard it, I knew there was something familiar about the song, and when I found it, I discovered that the male vocal was none other than William Fitzsimmons (who I found randomly not so long ago as well)! The final bridge/chorus where their voices intertwine and harmonize is fucking unbelievably beautiful. I am glad that the music producers of the show chose it, and I am glad that I could hunt it down and share it with you guys as one of today’s selected tracks.

Newton Faulkner – If This Is It
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_102_newtonfaulkner-ifthisisit.mp3]
When I heard that Newton had released a new album, Rebuilt by Humans, the follow up to his Hand Built By Robots, I’ll be honest, I wasn’t terribly interested. While I really fell in love with Dream Catch Me, the major single from HBBR, it took me a while to get into it, but when I did, I was hooked. However, that interest eventually fizzled, when the rest of the album didn’t really gel for me. Well, one of you guys (thanks Doug!) said that his new release was worth a listen, and so I listened. While I am not head over heels for the whole album, I am definitely flipping for this track. It is really beautiful, and the orchestration is massive. I love his voice, and the uplifting nature of the lyrics is certainly something to smile about. With this song, Newton has really proven to me, that I really DO need to pay closer attention to him; I like this even better than his first single.

Alphabeat – The Spell
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_102_alphabeat-thespell.mp3]
I will be totally honest, and get this out of the way right up front; I have been sitting on this one for a while now. While I loved this song the first time I heard it, I could only get my hands on a boot-leg, low quality version of it; but that all changed this week. Now that I’ve got the goods, I am more than happy to get the word out about the new amazing single from this Danish sensation; who previously filled me with shrieks of delight when I heard their amazing single, Fascination. While their entire debut album, This is Alphabeat, never really struck as strong of a chord with me as Fascination did, I never turned my attention completely away from these guys, as I knew they were capable of repeating that greatness again. With The Spell, they have totally captivated my attention once again with an extremely strong, catchy single, and I can only hope that the second time is the charm for me with Alphabeat. In the meantime, I can’t stop dancing around to this wonderful track.

Third Eye Blind – Don’t Believe A Word (download it here!!!)
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_102_thirdeyeblind-dontbelieveaword.mp3]
Yes, you are reading that right: I am featuring a song by Third Eye Blind, and no, it isn’t 1997! Most people probably think of the late nineties when they think of Third Eye Blind, because that was when they had the most success with radio mainstays Semi-Charmed Kind of Life, How’s It Going To Be, and Jumper. I randomly noticed they had released a new album recently, when I stumbled onto the stop-motiontastic video for Don’t Believe A Word. While the song didn’t fully draw me in initially, there was something about it that I really liked, and as such, I downloaded it. After a few listens, I realized it was the amazing riff that they utilize during the chorus that I loved. I always really liked his voice, and the song overall has proven to be quite the earworm. If you don’t count the part where he screams “you whore I’ll fucking kill you” right before the first chorus, I would venture a guess that Third Eye Blind could have another mainstream hit on their hands; more than 10 years after their successful debut.

Well, there’s your Friday five! Please be sure to let me know what you thought, and remember that I am always looking for your suggestions as well!

5SF: september 25

Y’all ready for another fabulous 5 tracks selected just for your listening pleasure today? Well, you better get ready, because here they come! Editor’s Note: This should have been released to the internets yesterday, but due to some scheduling issues, the presses were shut down for the evening, forcing us here at duanemoody.com to publish as soon as we could today. Our deepest apologies for this mix up.

Sugababes – Easy
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_925_sugababes-easy.mp3]
I wanted to pay tribute to the change in line up of a certain amazing girl group; a change that very well may spell the final fate of that very band’s future. Earlier this week, the last remaining original Sugababe was handed her walking papers, and while only time will tell what will happen with the ever changing group in the future, one thing is certain; they have had some major hits, and in looking back, I see that they have been a major presence on the 5SF. As such, it only feels fitting to offer up a hit from their past to show a bit of love for these fine ladies. This song was one of the first songs (that wasn’t just a re-recording or extra track added to a re-release) that was released after adding Amelle to the group (who replaced Mutya), and I think it is definitely one of their best. I love this song every which way, and the slutty lyrics and double entendres are just too wonderful to ignore. I don’t have much hope for the ‘Babes now that the amazing Keisha has left the building, but if this song is any indication, they certainly have the ability to keep moving when things change suddenly and drastically. Let’s hope the future looks bright for the NEW Sugababes.

Anouk – Lay It Down
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_925_anouk-layitdown.mp3]
AMAZING. That is one word that could easily be used to describe Anouk’s voice. I have featured her on the 5SF before; it was after hearing her amazing Lost on So You Think You Can Dance. Other than that song, I didn’t really seek out any of her music at the time… until recently. I am always scouring new releases for something new to check out and listen to, and I noticed that Anouk’s new album (with intense and quite amazing cover art) was released last week. As such, I figured I’d give it a go, and I am so glad I did. There are some massive songs on this album, and this one is my favorite. I absolutely love the power in her voice; she could jump a car battery using her vocal cords. This song is incredibly beautiful; the arrangement, lyrics, vocals, and all. I’m glad this one made a blip on my radar screen, because it is truly a wonderful find. As my friend Deb and I were discussing just yesterday about the album, it really is a wonder why Anouk isn’t more famous here; she is an amazing musician.

Monsters of Folk – Dear God (Sincerely MOF)

[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_925_monstersoffolk-deargod.mp3]
This light and airy number from this band of folk masters is truly a delight. I heard it randomly on the radio, and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the harps as they combine with the drum machine and the deep backing bass. The delicate vocals are woven in beautifully, and make for a truly beautiful song. If you are a fan of any of these guys or their respective bands (M. Ward did solo stuff and is in She & Him, Connor Oberst did solo stuff and is in Bright Eyes with Mike Mogis, and Jim James is in My Morning Jacket), you will definitely hear their influences weighing heavily on this track, and you will probably enjoy their work together, just as much I do.

The Lovemakers – Love Is Dead

[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_925_lovemakers-loveisdead.mp3]
This song didn’t really make such a big splash with my initially, but upon a second lesson, I fell really hard for it. This track was offered as a free track on iTunes a week or so ago, and I always give those tracks a listen; just in case. This time, it paid off, because I absolutely adore this song. It has the energy and spunk of the Sounds’ No One Sleeps When I’m Awake, and throws in a bit of that light, syrupy goodness of bands like the Lightning Seeds and the Pet Shop Boys (especially with regards to the male vocalist). Overall, it was a great find that lead me to checking out their recently released album, Let’s Be Friends; which has several other great songs on it as well.

Madonna – Celebration
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_925_madonna-celebration.mp3]
I give in. I cannot resist anymore. This song is by Madonna, and it is BRILLIANT. I want to dance all fucking night long and this song fills me with a gay glee that I cannot fully describe in words. As many of my friends will most certainly recall, I have been sort of hard of this old cougar over the years. Madge hasn’t ever really been a staple part of my music collection, mostly because I don’t ascribe to praising someone for EVERY SINGLE THING THEY’VE EVER DONE; which is something I see a LOT of gay men do with Madonna. For me, that which I would consinder her biggest misstep (Ray of Light) won a fucking Grammy, and as such, I think I have punished her (perhaps unfairly) for it ever since. Well, after hearing this song a few weeks ago, when it was released as the lead single on her upcoming hits collection with the same title, I will admit that I resisted it. I resisted hard. But her rock hard thighs and sveltely toned arms danced and pounded their way into my heart. This song is massive, and I definitely believe in giving credit where it is due; and Madonna, you deserve a standing O for this one, baby.

I hope you enjoyed the tracks that I picked for this week’s Friday five, and I hope that you will let me know what you thought. I also hope that you will let me know what you are listening to, as I always have my ear out for the next thing that will blow me away. Have a good weekend, kids, and if you are in Atlanta where the forecast is rain, stay dry and stay safe.

5SF: september 18

I’ll be honest, I didn’t post the 5SF last week because I was wrapped up in the Eagle raid. That being said, I am still in awe that it happened, and as more information comes out about it, I am more and more surprised at how it looks to be blatant homophobia. It’s extremely disappointing all around.

I am not skipping this week, though. This week’s picks are all strong, and most of them are major finds. I hope that you enjoy them, and I hope it gives you at least a few minutes to take your mind off of the whole debacle mentioned above. Let’s get started!

Priscilla Renea – Dollhouse
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_918_priscillarenea-dollhouse.mp3]
I discovered this song when I stumbled on the cutesy video on youtube one day last week. I instantly loved the production and arrangement of the song, and I was sure that it was another gem from production genius Max Martin. Interestingly enough, it isn’t him, but Benny Blanco, who’s worked with a lot of the same artists (which is probably why it sounded like similar production to me). I love the energy of the song (which has a lot of the spunk that major hits like My Life Would Suck Without You carry), and I especially like Priscilla’s voice; which sounds like it has some major power underneath it. This is such a cute little song, and one that I would expect to hear on the radio 1000 times.

A Fine Frenzy – Bird of the Summer
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_918_afinefrenzy-birdofthesummer.mp3]
A Fine Frenzy’s new album, Bomb in a Birdcage came out last week, and I have found myself falling deeper and deeper in love with it with each listen. There are some incredibly beautiful tracks on it (this one being one of the best), and while many people fell for A Fine Frenzy with her debut, for whatever reason, I wasn’t pulled in. However, that is no longer the case, A Fine Frenzy has delivered one of the best albums of 2009 with Bomb In a Birdcage, and this song is one of my favorites from the album. It is light, airy, and beautiful all over. I am glad that she snagged my attention this (the second) time around.

Noah and the Whale – Blue Skies
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_918_noahandthewhale-blueskies.mp3]
I posted about Noah and the Whale last year around this time, when I fell for their song, 5 Years Time; after it was featured in a Saturn commercial. Unfortunately, I didn’t fall any further for Noah and the Whale, and my interest never materialized past that one song. However, they recently released a new album, and I figured I would at least give it a listen to see if there were more gems like 5 Years Time on it, and what I found was surprising, and wonderful. This song stood out to me, because I absolutely love the arrangement. The vocals remind me of Peter Bjorn and John, and the music is something that should be played at a pivotal scene in a beautiful movie. After hearing snippets of this album, I am back on board with Noah and the Whale. It’s just like A Fine Frenzy, sometimes, it takes time… or another album.

Weezer – (If You’re Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_918_weezer-iwantyouto.mp3]
I will start by saying that I consider myself to be a fairly die-hard fan of Weezer. The Blue Album was one of my first CDs that I remember buying, and loving each song on it. Additionally, it is an album that really shaped the beginnings of my love for music. Each subsequent album showed that Weezer is a pop-rock band that is of a consistently high quality, and I have been a fan ever since. Amidst rumors of a break up after Make Believe (one of their best albums to date), Weezer quelled the fears of fans that didn’t want a break up to happen by releasing the Red Album, which unfortunately, I never really got into. There were some great songs on it, and it was definitely a good Weezer record, but for me, it was somewhat of a letdown. Well, a couple of weeks ago, a friend of mine on twitter said Weezer had a new fantastic song out, and after listening for like 5 seconds, I was in love with it. This song has all of the energy and cheesy sweet lyrics of the Weezer that I love. Rivers Cuomo is back in FULL FORCE, and this song should be a massive hit. I am hoping that their next album thrills me as much as this song does.

White Lies – Death
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_918_whitelies-death.mp3]
Sometimes hearing a song in context makes you realize how amazing it is; and that is exactly what happened to me with this song. I first heard this song back in March, when I posted about White Lies’ amazing track, Farewell to the Fairground. I really liked the song then, and really enjoyed much of their album, To Lose My Life. However, it wasn’t until I heard the song played in the background on The Vampire Diaries, that I realized just how incredible it was. It wasn’t even an important scene, but the way that it complimented the show, it really helped me to fully enjoy the song, and see intricacies and nuances I hadn’t heard in it before. I love when shows pay extra attention to the music that they play, because it is really appreciated by viewers like me; sometimes, that attention to detail will keep me coming back to the show time and time again. In this case, the show may be a bit hokey (think Dawson’s Creek… with vampires), but the writing is actually pretty good, and the music so far has been fantastic. It really sets the mood, and has done wonders for the show in my eyes. I can’t wait to see what gems they have for me peppered throughout each episode to come.

Well, there’s your Friday five. What do you think of this week’s selection? Please let me know!! Also, let me know what you are listening to, because I really, really want to know. Seriously, I love suggestions from people, and I always at least give them a go, so be sure to share them with me; you never know, I might feature one of your selections in the future.

5SF: september 4

Yesterday, I was thinking about what I was going to post today, and I had a little difficulty coming up with the five songs that I wanted to share. I decided to ask my fellow twitterati what they thought I should post, and I got several excellent suggestions; three of which I am actually going to feature today! Let’s get started! (Note: I think every song has a bad word or two in it, so don’t blast these at work unless you don’t care; just wanted to give the heads up)

The Swell Season – In These Arms
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_94_theswellseason-inthesearms.mp3]
This suggestion comes from my friend John, who caused immense excitement for me yesterday, when he messaged me that The Swell Season’s new single is already out (a fact that I was unaware of). John and I watched Once together a couple of years ago after the Oscars, and both of us agreed at that time that Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova (together, outside of the context of the movie, they go by The Swell Season) are downright brilliant actors and musicians. As for the new single, after 10 seconds of the 30 second preview, I knew that I was going to love this song, and it has not let me down. If this amazing first single is any indication of what we can expect from Oscar winning duo Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova (they won an Oscar for the song, Falling Slowly from Once), their new album will definitely be amongst my favorite albums of 2009. I’m glad that there is more coming from this incredibly talented music duo in the very near future, and a big thanks to John for bringing the fact that this song was already out, to my attention.

Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse – Revenge (feat. Wayne Coyne)
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_94_dangermouse-revenge.mp3]
This suggestion comes from my friend Brian. This track comes from an audio/visual collaborative project, helmed by Danger Mouse, called Dark Night Of The Soul. I love the John Lennon-esque vibe of the track, and the way it pays heavy tribute to Pink Floyd with the arrangement. The artistry of this song is beautiful, and it only adds to Danger Mouse’s incredible production range; his work spans from trend setting hip-hop teetering on the alternative, all of the way out to rock and roll. It seems whatever he’s up to, it’s something that is going to be at a minimum, innovative and interesting. A big thanks goes to Brian for pointing out this excellent suggestion!

Mew – Beach
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_94_mew-beach.mp3]
This suggestion comes from my friend Cody. The first time I heard this song, I found it to lean towards being a bit bouncy and unmanageable, but the more I listen to it, the more I hear the brilliance in it. The song is fantastic, and like a bucking bronco, refuses to stay still and let you reign it in. I love the backing synth, that reminds me of the ethereal quality of m83, and especially love the way they paired it with the sweet and tender vocals; together, they round out the package quite nicely, making for an amazing pop-rock track. I love arrangement, which sounds like it would be the perfect soundtrack for driving country roads with the top down. A big thanks goes to Cody for the amazing suggestion!!

Esmee Denters – Outta Here
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_94_esmeedenters-outtahere.mp3]
There is a lot of good music that comes out of the UK, and it never ceases to amaze me how much of it is completely overlooked by people in this country. This song was in the top ten on iTunes UK, and I had never even heard it before I stumbled onto it last night. After one listen, I sat there wishing it was songs like this that were dominating our radio airwaves, instead of songs from other tweens like Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus. This song has a banging beat, and a lot of energy. Esmee’s vocals are powerful, and a welcome addition to the “tween scene”; that is, if she can actually successfully cross the pond. The way I look at it, for each annoying track from Taylor Swift, if we could get a fantastic one like this one, there would be balance in the world. Turns out Esmee was a youtube star that Justin Timberlake caught wind of, and got her a record deal; maybe that’s enough for her to make it here. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Alexisonfire – This Could Be Anywhere in The World
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_94_alexisonfire-thiscouldbeanywhere.mp3]
I will start by saying that I have never been a fan of post-hardcore shout rock, and I have never seen any value in it (I don’t get the screaming). However, as many of you know, one of my favorite singers of all time, Dallas Green, actually plays in a post-hardcore band, Alexisonfire. Since I love his side acoustic project, City and Colour, so much, curiosity eventually got the better of me, and I wanted to see if I could find any Alexisonfire that I would like as well (my philosophy was, more Dallas is a good thing). With the release of their new album, Old Crows/Young Cardinals, I ended up finding one track that I liked right off, but still stood firm in believing that I probably wouldn’t listen to them, as they “weren’t my cup of tea”. Well, apparently, that has changed. I ended up FINALLY giving the rest of the album a listen, and I actually REALLY liked what I heard. It was then when I went back to see if I would like some of their older stuff, and I found this song, which is perhaps my favorite Alexisonfire track of all. I love the energy, and the way that Dallas’ voice soars during the chorus. I may never give shout rock as much of a chance as I did with Alexisonfire, but I can definitely say that I am glad I was able to overcome my initial skepticism, and given them a chance.

Well there’s your five songs for this Friday. Let this be a lesson; suggestions are more than welcome and many times, they will find their way into a 5SF of the future! So, let me know what you think of this week’s selections, and tell me what you are listening to as well. Finally, I want to extend another thank you to my twitter friends for hooking me up with three of these five fine selections. Now… let’s go enjoy a 3 day weekend, shall we?!
