the downing street memo; pay attention!

it seems like, in this day and age, that when something like the Downing Street Memo comes out, people would be like, “What the hell is that??? I want to know more!!”. Why, you ask? What is the Downing Street Memo? Well, it is a document contain meeting minutes from the July 23, 2002 meeting with Tony Blair. Why is that important? Well, it pretty much spells out that the Bush administration lied about “invasion as a last resort”, and actually detailed plans to convince the people and congress that an invasion of Iraq was necessary. It hints at the fact that the Bush administration manipulated evidence and intelligence on Iraq (i..e., blatantly “hyped” the activity in Iraq and of Saddam Hussein, in order to convince officials that action was necessary), and expresses Blair’s concerns about what the invasion of Iraq could mean. It shows a president hell bent on war and invasion, and doesn’t seem to highlight any sense of the repercussions.

bye bye Big Bird

I just heard that the House subcommittee decided to cut funding for PBS and NPR, and voted to eventually eliminate funding for public broadcasting all together. While I think that it is important to have public broadcasting, and think that it is essential for learning and development in an “open forum”, I think that there is more to this issue than simply getting rid of PBS and NPR.
First let me say this, so I can get it out of the way: I don’t want to get rid of NPR or PBS, and I think that the cookie monster should stay on TV and get to eat as many cookies as he wants (I still don’t think that the cookie monster is blame for kids being fat). Good, now with that being said, I can say this: If they are cutting this funding to create money to go towards other more important programs, what is the big deal???

BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WAIT A MINUTE!!!

Rumsfeld wants more Guantanamo

And why not, right??? Rumsfeld made a comment that it was “absolutely necessary” to keep Guantanamo Bay up and running. Now, I know what you are thinking, there are bad people there, right? Well, sure there are… it is a prison for terrorists. But, even though they are terrorists, they still deserve basic human rights, don’t they? Well, in Guantanamo Bay, they don’t really get that. See, as it is pretty well known, the prisoners there are tortured, and treated in inhumane and demoralizing ways (remember our friend the Koran?). Stuff that is allowed there would not be allowed if this prison were in, let’s say, Kansas. So, that substantiates a reason to keep it going??? That permits you to say that it is necessary??? Well, I decidedly disagree.

But you know what this must mean… I somehow figured that old Rumsy would be into S&M… this just helps to prove it.

bush’s aid: too little too late…

I felt compelled to at least say something about Bush’s recent proposal to give more money to aid Africa. All I should say is: BOUT TIME, but I can’t let it end there.

First things first: It sure is nice that Bush is “letting them loose” for some of the debt that they owe us. I bet there are African children that STILL WON’T get to eat tonight, but I bet they feel a weight has been lifted off of their gaunt little shoulders. Hell, you might as well pay off their Discover bill while you are at it.

I lost count at 100 Million…

Like we needed it, but here is more proof that the current administration is filled with nothing but a bunch of fuck ups:

?U.S. government mismanagement of assets in Iraq, from the lack of proper documentation on nearly $100 million in cash to millions of dollars worth of unaccounted-for equipment? The latest indication of that came Wednesday when investigators released a report saying $96.6 million in cash could not be properly accounted for. The total included more than $7 million that was simply gone, according to the report from the Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction.? (as written by Matt Kelly, Associated Press. Boston.com)

Conservative America…. UGH, pu-lease.

So, it has been a while since my last post, and this is something that I liken only to a mish mash of grief from the travesty towards civil rights that was the election earlier this month, and just sheer boredom, or what I like to call it, the lack of anything important to write. But now I feel that I must come out of my silence, for something , alas, has pissed me off again.
What I speak of is simple, and hey, now that I think about it, it does relate, if even ever so slightly, to one of the major issues that shaped the outcome of the election. What is this he speaks of, you may wonder. Well, I am talking about gay rights, and America’s ass-backward way of looking at homosexuality as a crazy, demented thing that was created to piss off the Christians, for whatever reason. Two things really have shown me how crazy Americans really are, and begs me to ask the question, “Why the hell do you care so much, and why can’t you just leave the homos alone????” So here it goes.

Day of reckoning, indeed.

I haven’t been able to write anything since hearing the news that there will be 4 more years of the same horrible political control, but now, I feel the need to just say a couple of things.

First, what happened? I know that most of the people that voted are just wondering what the hell happened. I am one of those people.

Second, how can this be declared a “victory”?? Bush barely squeaked in, and that is victory? Whatever.

And finally, using “moral” issues (and I use the term moral loosely, because I would think that lying and greed are not moral issues), to divide a nation, and take attention away from your own short comings and putting the focus on gay marriage and abortion is just fucking wrong. It is horrible, and shouldn’t be allowed. Here is hoping that nothing that horrible happens ever again.

As far as I stand, I now have no civil rights, and I take the voting trend to be a pretty clear message that people like me are not wanted here in the south, and many other parts of the country. I hope that times change, I thought that they had, and I hope that people change and begin to accept these moral values: acceptance and understanding. Here’s hoping indeed.

Day of reckoning

We have all waited for so long for this day, and now it is here. This is the day that will determine the course our nation will take over the next four years, and most likely for even longer. It will help us to determine where we stand in the world, and how we will work within the global cultural network. It is also a day that we get to celebrate the election of a new president, or drown our sorrows that the incumbent is re-elected. Here’s hoping that the latter does not happen.

The third and final… thank goodness

I must admit, I am getting to the point where I am just tired of seeing these debates. I am really tired of seeing Kerry and Bush go back and forth shouting numbers and “facts”. But last night’s debate, while entrenched in fact slinging, was great. It is really one of the times when Kerry looked and acted most presidential. Bush, on the other hand, looked like someone fumbling around, chasing a ball that is obviously out of his control. But aside from the way that the candidates looked or acted, there is one thing that really disturbs me. I read all of the analysis of the debates on all kinds of different news websites, watch CNN, listen to talk radio, but what I am really peeved about is how most reporters and analysts merely point out in happenstance that Bush flat out lies all of the time. Usually, their stance on Kerry is that he may have exaggerated a true fact by increasing numbers or leaving out one particular caveat of the fact, but Kerry doesn’t just flat out lie.
