the 31 best of 2008 – 28: Portishead – Third

Ten years.

Ten years is how long it was since a Portishead album was released. There has been much talk, and even more speculation about another album, but nothing ever came. So, when the news that Thirdwas going to FINALLY be released this year, this fanboy was elated. See, Portishead is one of my favorite groups; some of the songs that they have are so powerful and filled with emotion that they draw me in like almost no one else can. Beth Gibbon’s haunting voice is like no other, and she wields it like a drug to which I am hopelessly and utterly addicted to. Only having three albums (really only two, since one is just a live album), I was salivating for more Portishead, because they are one of those groups that there really isn’t anyone else out there like them; which is amazing, but saddening when they go on ten year hiatuses.

When I finally got my hands on Third earlier this year, I almost bet myself that it would be instant love. However, what happened was not what I was expecting, and here’s why… I think that when you have a 10 year span to build up until your next release, no matter what you do, it will never be everything that you (or your fans) want it to be. This doesn’t mean that it isn’t brilliant, but it does mean that it may not have the chance to surpass the brilliance displayed a decade ago… perhaps it is only meant to add to that brilliance; which it does. Such is the case with Third, it does not surpass its predecessors, but it comes close to meeting them and adds something amazing to their already impressive catalog.

This record is a cohesive piece of music; each song almost sounds out of place if listened to alone. There aren’t many stand out tracks with the aching moan of Sour Times (for which, I am sure, they are best known for), but overall, this album is truly a work of art. They managed to take their sound and age it almost perfectly for the time that had passed. It is important to remember that they were instrumental in creating the movement of trip hop, and with this album, they have shown that they are still serious contributors to, and shapers of, their ever growing, and ever changing genre. Third is massive, it is epic, it is overwhelming at moments, but it is digestible and enjoyable throughout.

Any true Portishead would love this record, it has everything: the haunting vocals, the tribal banging beats, the warbled guitars, the distorted rhythmic tremblings; they are all there. However, this time around, they have gone darker, deeper, and the result is something aching, and beautiful. For me, as I mentioned, no matter what they did, it could not soar higher than their second, self titled album (which is an all time top 5 album for me), but this album comes damn close; and considering the ten year gap, that ain’t half bad. I just hope that I don’t have to wait ten more years for more great music from this amazing band.

the 31 best of 2008 – 29: Goldfrapp – Seveth Tree

Ethereal, floaty, soft, meek, delicate, airy, and mesmerizing; none of these are words I would use to describe the former electroclash sound of Goldfrapp. However, with their recent release, Seventh Tree, they reinvented themselves once again, and in doing so, made one of the most understated, beautiful albums of the year. The marrying of Allison Goldfrapp’s angelic, whisper-driven voice with the subtle beats and mellow guitar plucking and synthesizer of Will Gregory is quite amazing.

I definitely see Goldfrapp as pioneering in many aspects; after the success of their single Oh La La, it seems that everyone has jumped on that bandwagon, and has tried to copy their sound (most recently, I’m looking at you Xtina). Perhaps that this is why they chose to revert to their more ethereal roots, and delve into a softer side of their music? Who knows the motivation, but one thing is certain, the result is an album that is filled to the brim with creativity, synth-driven subtlety, and something that is sure to please the music lover in anyone; that is, anyone that loves great music. For me, the record has this olden quality, that sounds as if it is being played back on an old timey phonograph; all it’s missing is the crackles and pops of the needle as it circles around the record. Likewise, it is one of those albums that contains song after song that sound as if they would be right at home being played during different pivotal moments during a film.

As I said, softness wasn’t something I would have considered with regards to Goldfrapp, because I unfamiliar with their earlier work, and I had only heard their more dance-themed electroclash sound (which, I will be honest, I wasn’t too much of a fan of). That being said, after hearing the amazing lead off single, A & E, from this album, I saw something that I hadn’t seen in them before, and instantly wanted more. The rest of the album pleased me more than I was expecting, and is filled with track after track of well crafted, beautiful anthems. I for one am glad that they have gotten in touch with this softer side, because the resulting record is amazing, and is definitely something that people will be trying to reproduce. I guess being a pioneer of sorts makes for several copycats down the line, but they say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery; and by now, Goldfrapp should be more than flattered. Judging by the quality of this record, I will predict that they have much more flattery to look forward to on the horizon.

Unrelated to the sound of the record, I do have to say that it is uncanny how much Allison Goldfrapp looks like Mary Kate/Ashley Olsen on the cover, no?

the 31 best of 2008 – 30: Wild Sweet Orange – We Have Cause To Be Uneasy

In at number 30 is a band that hails from nearby Birmingham, Alabama. This indie-rock set first caught my attention with their song Either/Or, mostly because of the unexpectedly different melody and timing they used in the song; the stop and start of the beat and the buzzing guitars is really something quite amazing. It was something that I couldn’t ignore, and I ended up falling head over heels in love with that song, so I naturally had to check out the rest of the album; and I am very glad that I did. Not only do I love their name (it has Orange in the title!), but I have really come to love their sound and this record.

We Have Cause to Be Uneasy is full of a wide variety of mid tempo rock tracks, as well as a fair share of down tempo, soul searching confessions. They also sneak a little of their local roots in with a banjo and some country flair near the middle of the album. The eloquence with which the imagery in each song comes across makes for a great story, and coupled with the melody and music, makes for some great music as well; all intimate, and sometimes tragic (such as the track Sour Milk, which is the heartbreaking tale about a deadbeat father, and the disappointment in parents when they don’t live up to perceptions of what parents “should be” — damn I can relate to that). I really have to give another nod to the masterful use of imagery in their song writing, because there are many times that you can’t escape the moment that they are trying to catch you in; which for a musical act, is a huge success, as far as I’m concerned.

The vocalist reminds me a bit of what Connor Oberst might sound like if he shouted every once and a while, and got himself in to such a flow of raw emotion, that he had to just let it all loose on the record (which is NOT a condescension to Connor, I love that guy just like he is). This explosion of emotion happens many times on the record, and really expresses the real feeling that went into some of these songs; again, making for some fantastic music.

Overall, this is a great indie-rock album that has some really raw, emotional, and fantastically crafted songs on it. I am so incredibly excited that I found out about these guys, because they are really doing something slightly different, and they are doing it really, really well. Fans of bands like Death Cab For Cutie, as well as Bright Eyes (aka Connor Oberst), should definitely get this album now; these guys have made a great album, and a fantastic contribution to their music genre, and it definitely deserves its place amongst my favorite records of the year.

Standouts: Either/Or, Ten Dead Dogs, Sour Milk, Night Terrors, Land Of No Return.

the 31 best of 2008 – 31: The Ting Tings – We Started Nothing

Let’s get this party started right, shall we? First up on my year end list of the best 31 albums of 2008 is a record that should really get under your skin and drive you crazy, but doesn’t. First of all, you have Katie White’s shrill-like vocal styling; that you will either LOVE, or seriously hate. For me… it’s serious love. Also, I have this thing when I hear a song, and they repeat the same thing (be it a repetitive rhythm, or vocal) over, and over, and over, and over… I freak out. I hate it. However, The Tings Tings
have done something that rarely happens; they have done that very thing… over, and over, and over, and instead of hating it… I LOVE IT. The first time I heard Great DJ, there was something catchy, intense, and so simple that it had to work; and it really pulled me in. After I listened to this album, I realized that this record is one of those perfect albums for dancing your butt off in your room, hoping that your mom won’t walk in on you looking like a fool to; but even if she did, she would probably think you were pretty cool because of who you were listening to. This is one of those bands that make indie-dance pop so sexy and cool, that I bet even your mom would take notice.

The formula for each song is simple, but the beats are heavy and infectious. There is something oh-so-indie about this album, but at the same time, so commercial at the same time; after all, Apple snagged these guys and propelled them into the limelight (at least in the UK if you are counting limelight by chart standards) by selecting perhaps the best song on the record, Shut Up and Let Me Go, for one of their coveted ipod commercials earlier this year. The energy and the passion in each track is something that keeps you moving, and wanting more; and the simplicity and silliness in some of the lyrics (how do you play someone like a Fruit Machine, exactly?!?!) reminds me of other guilty pleasure groups like Cibo Matto that are practically impossible to listen to without a smile on your face; and with The Ting Tings, it will be a smile on your lips, and a tapping toe to go with it.

Several songs on the record were released as singles, notably Great DJ, Shut Up and Let Me Go, and That’s Not My Name, and I know that many more can still come from this record. It’s an album chock full of radio ready dance indie-pop hits that beg to be played, and danced to. The Ting Tings have banged their way into my heart with their infectious beats and catchy rhythms, and if you listen to this record, I bet that you will be pulled in as well. Make sure to do yourself a favor and check out their videos too… they are fun and interesting.

Standouts: Shut Up and Let Me Go, Traffic Light, That’s Not My Name, Great DJ.

before the best… there’s the rest

There were some massive albums this year. There were some massive singles as well. Unfortunately, not every album was as massive as a particular song might have been, and as such, it fell off of my list; but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t deserve recognition for being great. Also, there were some fantastic albums that were released this year that didn’t meet the criteria for my year end list (EP, re-release, live album, best of collection), so, instead of just ignoring them, I thought I would compile a little “best of the rest list” before getting into the meat of my favorite 31 records of 2008. How does that sound?

Alright, here we go:
The Cardigans – Best Of: As much as I love the Cardigans (they are definitely amongst my favorite groups of all time), putting a Best Of collection amongst the other contenders kind of isn’t fair for the rest of the studio albums on the top 31 list; even if the record (a double record in this case) is amazing. That being said, it’s a great collection with a ton of songs that I hadn’t heard before, mostly because they were B sides or on soundtracks. If you love the Cardigans, it is a MUST have. It is a solid five star album.

Sara Bareilles – Between the Lines: Live at the Fillmore: What should I say that hasn’t been said before? Sara Bareilles is one of the most talented musicians out there right now, and she kills it on this live album. If you have seen her live, you know what I am talking about, and should already own this… if you haven’t seen her, get this, because the audio is amazing.

Robyn – Robyn: If this album would have been released this year, for the first time, it would have probably been number one (if not amongst the top spots) on this list. However, this CD was originally released in 2005, and there isn’t enough new here to make it a contender. That being said, IF this album had of been released this year, it would have fit perfectly; which is a testament as to how forward and amazing this record is… it can stand the test of 3 years, and do so effortlessly. I can’t wait for the next record from Robyn.

Antony and the Johnsons – Another World EP: I love Antony and the Johnsons, and if this EP is any indication as to what we have in store from his next full length release in January, well, you will see this name again next year around this time. The first song on this EP is breathtakingly amazing.

Kaiser Chiefs – Off With Their Heads: Here’s a great record that didn’t connect with me as much as their previous release, but it’s definitely a good record, and I am glad that it’s in my collection.

She & Him – Volume One: It was Paste Magazine’s number one, and while I do really love this record, it didn’t resonate with me on that level. Zooey Deschanel’s voice is amazing; I can’t wait for volume two.

M83 – Saturdays=Youth: And here’s our first casualty ladies and gents… if there were 32 spots, it would be on the list. Fantastic record throughout, it just waivers at the end with the ultra long track, and that is really all that hurts it.

Dave Barnes – Me + You + The World: Here’s another album that should have made the list, but didn’t because there are only so many days in December. It’s a great record in the same vein as Jason Mraz with a little bit more Marc Broussard. There are some eloquent and beautiful songs on this album that captivate me every time I hear them.

Jesse McCartney – Departure: A solid pop album, with some definite movers and dance floor shakers on there. There are a ton of singles on this record, so I don’t know why he has only released two. Either way, he’s maturing nicely.

Ben Folds – Way to Normal: Another solid, and hilarious, album from the great Ben Folds. Just missed the cut, seriously.

Matt Alber – Hide Nothing:This one is kind of a conflict for me, because there are some AMAZING songs on it, but there are more than a couple filler tracks that really drug it down. I am definitely happy to have this in my music collection though, because when Matt’s good, he’s GREAT, seriously, seriously GREAT.

My Favorite Highway – How To Call A Bluff: There are some stunning songs on this album, and they remind me a lot of last year’s top ten group Melee, but they just missed the mark for this year’s list. Note that you cannot by the physical CD on amazon, so the link is for the MP3 CD. If you must only get one song, you have to get Bigger Than Love. That song is amazing.

Aqualung – Words & Music: Lastly, I HAVE to mention Aqualung, not only because he made my top ten last year, but because he released possibly one of the most amazingly beautiful songs on this record, called Arrivals. It is the last track of a record that feels sort of hurried, but there is nothing about this song that isn’t beautiful, sweet, and oh-so elegantly constructed. This is a MUST have just because of that one song, I tell you; I only wish the rest of the album would have been as amazing.

Alright, I PROMISE that the next blog post will be your number 31 CD… stay tuned… it’s coming soon!

5SF: november 28

I hope that everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving; I ended up being stranded in bed with my unpredictable back. All is well though, because I got some well needed rest, and was able to play lots of video games (which was fun). I appreciate all of the well wishes from everyone, and return them right back!! Also, I hope that everyone is okay today, and safe and sound; especially with nonsense like this going on out there. People. Calm down. There is no need to trample someone to get a deal on anything; nothing is worth that much. It really makes me sad for that person’s family, and my heart goes out to them.

Well, not to get everyone in a downer, but I just felt compelled to say something about that horrible incident. No amount of savings is worth that, I really can’t believe people are that desperate. Alright, enough about that… here’s this week’s five fabulous songs for you; and note that this is the LAST Friday five that will take place before the MASSIVE year end best of 2008 CD countdown, which starts on December 1!

Okkervil River – Lost Coastlines
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1128_okkervilriver-lostcoastlines.mp3]
I have been sitting on this song for a few weeks now, but I have been enjoying it more and more with each listen. It starts off simple, and the builds to an all out head bopping dance rock-pop number that I swear sounds like The Cure, Morrissey, and The Shins are all collaborating on one track. The result is something so inherently 80’s alternative, yet still current enough to really make you want to pick up the record for future listens. The song would fit in either decade, but it’s definitely interesting to hear the 80’s sound of such great bands like The Cure being updated slightly for the here and now.

Matt Alber – End of The World
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1128_mattalber-endoftheworld.mp3]
I almost didn’t pick this one for this week because I picked a Matt Alber track last week, and I don’t want to delve into the realm of overkill. BUT… I saw the accompanying video for this song last night, and I shit you not, there were fucking tears streaming down my face by the end. It is an insanely beautiful song, and the video is so completely sweet, honest, and believable, that it really reminded me of the amazing scene between Jack and Jack on Torchwood (if you don’t know what I am talking about, check this out. Wow, right?!); too bad I can’t link to the video so you can see it as well. Hmpf! I am sure that it will find its way onto youtube soon enough, so do yourself a favor and remember to look it up when it does; it is exquisite, and only strengthens my already huge crush on Matt Alber.

Passion Pit – Sleepyhead
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1128_passionpit-sleepyhead.mp3]
This song is weird… and that is why I LOVE IT. The beat, the clapping, the weird background vocals, the tribal sounds… all of it is AMAZING. This is one of those songs that you hear it, and wonder what the fuck you are listening to, and you want to know because it is so fucking amazing that you have to have it and play it on repeat. These guys are being compared to fellow electro rock groups like MGMT, and I definitely see the resemblance, but there is something in this song that makes me love it so much more than anything I have heard from the others so far. Also, be sure to check out the trippy, and amazing video for this song, because it is equally amazing, and really compliments the video in a way that isn’t fully describable; the video is definitely a work of art on it’s own. I seriously cannot get enough of this song, so beware, it is a MAJOR earworm.

Freezepop – Frontload (Designer Drugs Remix)

[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1128_freezepop-frontload.mp3]
I have been a fan of Freezepop ever since I heard the AMAZING track they did for the Guitar Hero series called Less Talk More Rokk. Well, I noticed on iTunes that they released an EP recently, I was really impressed by this track. This particular remix is incredibly hot, and is so synthed out that it is just insane. I want to put on my dancing shoes and fucking gyrate all night long to this track. It is actually hard to sit still and type as I listen to it. I am really glad to have been exposed to Freezepop from Guitar Hero, and I have enjoyed pretty much everything I have heard from them.

Len – Steal My Sunshine
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1128_len-stealmysunshine.mp3]
Poor Len… such an amazing song, and that was about it. Well, lucky for them, this amazing track was recently featured in Zack and Miri Make a Porno, which instantly made me put it back into rotation; and I’m sure, made them a small chunk of change at the same time. This is one of those songs that are perfect to drive around to, or to enjoy a great time with friends. This song made a splash back in 1999, and was even featured in the movie Go (which had a pretty amazing soundtrack). Even though it was there one hit wonder, Len sure sold a lot of albums based on this little ditty; I remember for a while, you couldn’t go to a used CD store and see any less than 10 Len albums in the used bin. I guess people got tired of the song, but not me… I’m glad to bring it back!

So there you have it, five new songs for your listening pleasure. I hope you enjoyed them, and as always tell me what you are listening to as well! Let’s share people!

5SF: november 21

It was hard not to post any of the leaked tracks from Britney’s upcoming album, Circus this week, because frankly, it is quite good. She has really worked hard this time around, and it really shows; I see big things for her in the near future. However, since it isn’t technically out yet, I don’t want to post about it yet, and as always, there are tons of other songs that I have ready for you. One of this week’s tracks is even about Ms. Spears; how appropriate, no? Now, without further adieu…

Matt Alber – Monarch
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1121_mattalber-monarch.mp3]
I first saw the video for this many, many months ago, and I searched the interwebs high and low trying to get my hands on this track so that I could feature it. Well, I couldn’t find anything, and then I saw it was FINALLY available on amazon a week or so ago, so I quickly ordered the CD, and now I can finally feature my praise for this track properly this Friday. This is the lead single from out artist Matt Alber’s recently released record, Hide Nothing. His voice has that husky, and sexy quality that is certainly reminiscent of fellow out artist Rufus Wainwright, and I can’t help but notice that he’s quite the swoon-worthy guy; just check out those eyes! The first time I heard this song, I knew that I wanted to hear a lot more from Matt, and I have eagerly been waiting for his CD to get released so I could feature him here, and let you guys know about this amazing artist. Definitely do yourself a favor and check out his videos on youtube; not only can he sing beautifully, but as I mentioned, he is quite a handsome guy!

James Morrison – You Make It Real
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1121_jamesmorrison-youmakeitreal.mp3]
I have been told by a few of you to give James’ new release a chance, and after hearing this song on BBC 1 the other day, I can see why you wanted me to; this track is sweet and ever so beautiful. I couldn’t really get into James’ debut that was released last year, but it wasn’t because it wasn’t good; I can definitely recognize his talent, and I certainly get that he is good at what he is doing. However, it just didn’t mesh with me for whatever reason, so when I saw he had released another record, I wasn’t that interested. Well, color me interested now, because this song is sweet music to my ears. I am glad that I listened to your recommendations and checked him out again… also, this is a big nod to the amazingness that is BBC 1; they play so many songs that I wouldn’t expect to like, but do!!

Bebo Norman – Britney
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1121_bebonorman-britney.mp3]
Many of you may not know this about me, but I used to be a certified Jesus Freak (especially musically). When I was in college, ALL of my music was pretty much contemporary Christian, with my favorite band being the amazing Jars of Clay. Through Jars of Clay, I found Bebo Norman, and I still count both of them amongst my favorite artists to this day (even though I am not as “into them” as I was back then). Well, I saw somewhere randomly that Bebo had a song about Britney on his new record (which was released a couple of months ago), and it prompted me to check out his newest release. The song is really sweet, and touching, and honestly, it is nice to know that people really do see the what the media and the press can do to stars like Ms. Spears, and offer compassion for her having hard times because of it. Bebo definitely writes from a very Christian perspective (being that he is a Christian artist), but I have never gotten a sense that he is offering anything but compassion and understanding; without judgment. In this song, he’s coming from a place of compassion, and find that refreshing; especially in a time when so many others that call themselves Christian come from a place of such hatred. One thing that I learned when I was so into church, was the God, Jesus, and Christianity as a religious identity isn’t meant to be a tool used for damning, persecuting, or judging anyone; it is meant to be a tool for showing compassion, understanding, and love. Since I came out, church hasn’t been a big part of my life, partly because of the hate and hypocrisy I constantly see splattered about the news, but little things like Bebo’s music remind me that not all Christian’s are like that; some of them really are coming from the place that the Bible says that they should… a place of love and hope. Regardless of whether you interpret Bebo’s message to be love from God, or just love from someone that cares, Christians like Bebo really seem to exemplify what I came to know as Christianity in the first place; and when I heard that in this song, I really loved it. I appreciate Bebo’s compassion, and after listening to his recently released self-titled album, I remember why I loved him so much; he is a fantastic singer, artist, and musician, and he seems to be a truly fantastic person at heart… if only other Christians could see that you can love God without hating someone who doesn’t fit the mold perfectly through your eyes. To speak quite frankly, it isn’t about believing in God; it is about being a good person, and caring about others, and seeing that we all struggle through different things in our lives, and offering compassion to those in their time of need. If only those that judge and hate could show the love that they are supposed to subscribe to, perhaps we’d all be better off for it. Religious or not, I think that’s something we could all learn from.

Ladyhawke – Dusk ‘Til Dawn
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1121_ladyhawke-dusktildawn.mp3]
In kind of a way to honor Ladyhawke’s solid debut record finally coming out in the US this week, I wanted to feature my favorite track from the record. Since there has been so much continued press and hype about her in the music blogosphere, I didn’t feel the need to focus on her specifically, because I felt that it had been covered, and that the word was out there. I will say that I am definitely impressed with her debut, and I do believe that you will see it amongst my albums of the year; but again, I felt like everyone else had already raised that flag, so I didn’t need to. Well, her record is finally out in the US this week, and to celebrate, here’s my favorite track from the album. It is definitely a little eighties, and it is a toe-tapper that will have you bopping your head and wanting more. You may not have heard about Ladyhawke from me first, but know that just because I haven’t said anything, doesn’t mean that I don’t give her a big thumbs up as well.

Merril Bainbridge – Mouth
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1121_merrilbainbridge-mouth.mp3]
To round out the bunch, here’s one of my favorite one hit wonders from the nineties. If you recall, last week, I said that I would pepper future 5SF’s with these little gems, and this is one of my favorites. This song wasn’t really HUGE, but it is definitely one of those tracks that is a MAJOR ear worm. I seriously cannot skip this track if it comes up on my ipod, and if it comes on the radio, I find myself singing along at the top of my lungs. I have to this day, never heard another Merril Bainbridge track, but this one more than makes up for anything else she may have done; it’s pop perfection. Even if you hate this song, I can bet that even you know the words. Songs like this are a perfect example of the one hit wonders from the nineties, and these tracks REALLY take me back there. Enjoy!

Well, there’s another five song Friday for you!! I do want to follow up and apologize if I unwillingly took some of y’all to “church” this week. That is a side of me that I usually don’t have much to say about, because of the hypocrisy in the world that bothers me so much; but I really liked the song, and where it seemingly comes from, and wanted to share it. It’s also important for me to define why I say “seemingly comes from”: since I don’t know him personally, I can only assume that Bebo writes from a place of love, and because I have never heard otherwise, I do believe that he does. However, because of my experience with some Christians, I will always remain cautiously skeptical, because I have been burned so many times. I will NEVER understand how someone could use something as reaffirming and positive as religion (is supposed to be) to persecute or judge anyone, and perhaps that is why I don’t bother saying much about it. I believe in God, and if you don’t, that is perfectly fine… and I just wish that it could be that simple for everyone else. People like Bebo give me hope that maybe, someday, other religious people can speak from a place of love and not hate. Oh well… enjoy the music, let’s not worry too much about all of that this afternoon, okay? Have a great weekend, and tell me what you’ve got playing on your music device!!

5SF: november 14

Initially, I was planning on doing a homage post of some great one hit “oneders” from the 90s for today. However, last night, as I started looking, I kept finding songs I hadn’t heard in ages, and ended up finding WAY more than 5 songs that I would love to bring back out of obscurity, and show a little love to in these five song weekly festivals. So I decided to do one or two every now and then, and that way, I can have a (hopefully) steady stream of hits from the 90s that will make regular appearances in the five song Friday’s of the future. That sounds fun, doesn’t it? Well, let’s go ahead and get to this week’s installment; I have some great songs for you to listen to!

Tom Baxter – Better
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1114_tombaxter-better.mp3]
Sometimes, not very often, I hear a song, and it fucking moves me. This is one of those songs. I was reading my favorite music blogs last night, and XO unloaded this amazing piece of beauty on me, and I couldn’t be more grateful. This song is so beautiful, and so completely vulnerable, that I just can’t help but swoon like a school girl. I am so glad that there are great artists out there like Tom Baxter, making music like this that truly speak to me, and I am grateful to have fellow bloggers getting the word out about them. This is THE reason that I do these five song Fridays. I like to do my part in music dissemination, and I hope that my sharing tracks each week brings great stuff to you guys too; especially songs like this one… wow.

Take That – Greatest Day
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1114_takethat-greatestday.mp3]
I have to say, that I have always been a “fan” of Take That, but I have always had a hard time really, really getting into them. However, after seeing Stardust, and LOVING their amazing song that plays as the credits roll (Rule The World), I will admit that I was excited when I heard they were releasing an album next month. Well, one listen to Greatest Day, and I am even more excited, because it has the same feel and energy as Rule the World, and I am really, really digging it. Maybe 2008 is the year that Take That take my attention fully? I can say that things are definitely looking good at this point.

Logan Lynn – Feed Me To The Wolves
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1114_loganlynn-feedmetothewolves.mp3]
First of all, I will say that the first time I heard this song, I didn’t like it. However, I watched the video all of the way through a second time, and I really got into the lyrics. After watching the video again, I realized that I actually REALLY like it after all. Not only that, but Logan is kind of adorable, and I love the tenderness in his voice coupled with the electro beats in the background. This song is a major grower, so if you don’t love it instantly, please give it a second chance; I am so very glad that I did, because I realized how great it is, rather than letting it slip into oblivion. Also, I love that Logan is an out queer artist (ahem, Out Magazine), and represents another great gay musician out there on the scene.

Fall Out Boy – I Don’t Care
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1114_falloutboy-idontcare.mp3]
I have been enjoying this fun little rock number for a few weeks now, and I was instantly in love with it when I first heard it. I have had kind of a love/hate relationship with Fall Out Boy, loving some stuff and hating other stuff, but there is no denying that these guys can turn out a killer single. This song is crazy catchy, and the chorus is infectious! Also, one MAJOR bonus, and perhaps the reason that I wanted to feature them this week, was that they donated $50,000 in opposition to Prop 8. Our straight allies are coming out of the wood work, and I am extremely proud to have them on our side; and it’s just a bonus that they make great pop music! Thanks for the support Fall Out Boy, and here is some support right back at you! I will DEFINITELY be getting their upcoming CD when it is released.

The Folk Implosion – Natural One

[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1114_folkimplosion-naturalone.mp3]
Here’s this week’s 90s one hit wonder flashback track… and it’s a doozy. This song was in the controversial movie Kids, which I remember seeing in high school and being completely blown away at how gritty and no-holds barred it was. Regardless of how I felt about the movie, one thing REALLY stuck with me; this amazing song. I bought the CD single (remember doing that!!??), and my friend Chuck and I would drive around and listen to this song on repeat. After finding it again last night while I was looking for 90s one hit wonders, and listening to it again, I remember why I loved this song so much; it is epic. This song is so catchy, and the beat is so head bopping amazing, that even now, more than 10 years later, I find myself listening to it on repeat again. This song is fantastic, and I am glad to rediscover it. Just wait and see what else I have if you love this forgotten gem!!!

Whew, another Friday five on the books. Great stuff, eh? Let me know what you liked, or didn’t, and as always, tell me what you are listening to. I hope you enjoyed these tracks, and the addition of the 90s obscure track, and stay tuned for more songs that you probably loved, but probably forgot about ages ago!! Have a great weekend.

5SF: november 7

As horrible as things are for gays in this country right now, it is hard to want to write about anything else. I am so disgusted that not only is there so much hatred for our relationships that people want to prevent us from getting married, but that there are actually states where gay people cannot adopt children. That is sickening, and any “Christian” that stands behind that belief should be totally ashamed of themselves; one truly cannot actually believe that they are doing good by preventing a child from having a parent (or two parents) that loves them, rather than forcing them to grow up in foster care, can they? With each thing that comes out in regards to our second class status, I am more and more disappointed with people in this country, and I just have to focus on other things like music, to keep from seriously melting down. That being said, I have five great songs today that have been helping me numb out some of the thoughts about this hatred, and I hope that they distract you for a short time, and make your Friday just a little better (through good music) as well.

Agnes Carlsson – Release Me
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_117_agnescarlsson-releaseme.mp3]
This is just what we need to bring us some good spirits; a new gay anthem, right?! This song is amazing, and I am in major music debt to my friend Stu for this one. He simply told me that I had to hear it because it is amazing, and well, he is right… it is utterly amazing and the only bad thing about it, is that it isn’t longer. It is so feel good and has the perfect dance beat. It doesn’t get much gayer than this; it is practically it’s own gay pride float!! Agnes is another one of those amazing Swedes bringing us the best that pop has to offer, and she was a winner of Swedish idol to boot! Play this song on repeat for a little while, and you will definitely be dancing around and have a smile on your face… trust me; I’ve been playing it on repeat all week long!

Tami Chynn – Frozen
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_117_tamichynn-frozen.mp3]
Okay, I have to admit that I have been holding this one back for a few weeks now. I love the song (it seems that Red One and Akon can do no wrong these days, production wise, eh!?!), but I couldn’t find an mp3, so that I could feature it on one of these five song Fridays (damn you iTunes and your mp4’s!). Well, I managed to scrounge one up, because I had to bring something peppy and fun for this week; especially with the aforementioned stuff swirling in my brain. Tami Chynn has had a couple of hits in her home country of Jamaica, but this is her first one to try and capture the US market. I have to say, that this song has taken me by storm. It is a great hip-hop flavored dance jam, and should definitely deserves to be on the radio. I can’t wait to see what else we have to look forward to from Ms. Chynn.

Laura Marling – Ghosts
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_117_lauramarling-ghosts.mp3]
This is unfortunately one of those songs that I was told about in the past, but I never got into it; only to hear it again later and be instantly taken by it. I hate when I am like that, because I really love sharing stuff with other people, and I really like getting recommendations myself; it’s just that sometimes I am out to lunch for whatever reason, and I guess if it doesn’t click then, I forget all about it. Well, lucky for me that I came back to this one, because the chorus is catchy, and will stick with you (even if it doesn’t the first time around!!). Laura brings us her great folk-pop from the UK, proving yet again that there is a ton of great music coming from those islands. It’s crazy to me that she’s only 18, because she definitely sounds older than that in her vocal styling. This is such a great single, and I absolutely love that chorus.

Semi Precious Weapons – Semi Precious Weapons
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_117_semipreciousweapons.mp3]
To quote Christian Siriano, “what a hot tranny mess!!”. Yet in this case, I mean nothing negative at all… this is hot tranny in the GREAT way!!! I heard about Semi Precious Weapons through Logo, and really enjoyed their kitschy style, and the way that they marry hard rock riffs with their own take on glam-rock. This song reminds me a lot of the energy from bands that I love like the Darkness and Scissor Sisters; and I bet these guys would be awesome live. I love music acts that don’t take themselves too seriously, and actually sound like they were having a kick ass time while they were recording the track. Semi Precious Weapons definitely have that vibe on this track, where it just sounds like a pretty party was going on in the studio; and by the looks of the video, I bet it was!! Be aware that he says fucking a lot in this song, so it probably isn’t a good idea to blast it over your computer speakers if you are at work.

Jamelia – Beware of The Dog

[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_117_jamelia-bewareofthedog.mp3]
Okay, I will admit openly that I am posting about Jamelia this week because of something that I wrote on Jiingo, where I compared this track to Hilary Duff’s most recent single release, titled Reach Out. See, both songs use a sample from the Depeche Mode song Personal Jesus, but this one does it so much better, and it was released a full two years before Hilary’s copycat song. Given that Hilary will most likely get more glory for her version, I wanted to spread the word even more about the fabulous Jamelia, and her superior use of the sample. If you haven’t heard of her before, you have now, and you must do yourself a favor and check out the rest of this record… it’s hot, and it really makes me wonder why she isn’t huge; both in here and across the world. She is a huge asset to pop music, and I can’t wait to hear more from Jamelia.

Well, writing about these songs has definitely put me in a better mood, and has given me a little while to focus on something that I love, rather than on someone that hates me. I hope that everyone has a great weekend, and make sure to let me know what you are listening to! We will continue to fight, and we will prevail. Civil rights aren’t just for some; they are for ALL OF US.

5SF: october 31

I guess this is the Halloween edition of five song Friday, not because it is Halloween themed, but simply because it is happening on Halloween this year. I am wearing a cute orange shirt today that has three ghosts on it, and when you turn off the lights, the word boo glows in the dark. It was too cute to pass up… and it was orange! I guess Halloween should be a favorite holiday of mine, since orange is everywhere, and it is an excuse to eat lots of candy, but I never really get into it to be honest. We are going to give out candy, and check in on our neighbor’s party, but that’s about it. Whatever you are up to this ghoulish “holiday”, rest assured that I have some great songs for you today, none of which have anything to do with Halloween, but are great nonetheless. Alright, here it goes…

Horse Feathers – Curs of Weeds
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1031_horsefeathers-cursofweeds.mp3]
I first heard Horse Feathers on the indie channel of XM, and I thought they were mellow and delightful. I downloaded their most recent release, and after hearing this song once, I freaking loved it. The vocals remind me of the smoky/raspy vocals of artists like Ray LaMontagne, which are coupled with a backing female vocal that take something beautiful and make it gorgeous. The delicate nature of this song just makes me want to close my eyes and absorb it all. The violins are achingly beautiful, and the tenderness and composition of the instrumentation is fantastic. The rest of the record is quite good, and being that this song was such an instant favorite, I am happy that I could share it this week. I love discovering stuff like this.

Nicole Scherzinger Pussycat Dolls – I Hate This Part
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1031_pcd-ihatethispart.mp3]
Now, I was originally a skeptic of PCD, but they wouldn’t go away, and eventually, I was lured into their pop web, and ended up becoming somewhat of a fan. Given that I loved the first single off of Doll Domination (When I Grow Up) so much, I had to give the rest of the record a chance, and in my time with it, I have found several great songs on the record. However, my favorite BY FAR, is this amazingly beautiful ballad that pretty much proves what we knew all along; not only is Nicole Scherzinger the voice behind the Pussycat Dolls, but she pretty much NEEDS a solo career. Seriously. Watch the video for this song. She’s definitely carrying this group, and that doesn’t bother me; so as long as they make fantastic songs like this one. I just hope that Nicole is happy, and keeps bringing the goods like she is doing here. Damn she sings the shit out of this song; just listen at about 3:10 in… wow.

P!nk – I Don’t Believe You
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1031_pink-idontbelieveyou.mp3]
As I mentioned earlier this week, I was excited to snag P!nk’s newest album, which came out on Tuesday, and I will say that this record is definitely a grower. With the first listen, I liked it, but with each subsequent listen, many of these songs are really sticking with me in a great way. This song in particular is beautiful, heartbreaking, and perfect for her smoky voice. I have liked P!nk for a long time now, and with this record, she has just further solidified her fan base; it is a great album, and is already among my favorites of this year. I hate that she had to endure a break up, but at least she was able to channel some of that energy into making Funhouse such a great record.

The Saturdays – Work
[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1031_saturdays-work.mp3]
I was originally skeptical of the Saturdays (lots of skepticism this week!); mainly because I felt like they were a bit of a Girls Aloud wannabe. However, their first single, If This Is Love, found it’s way onto my ipod, and I found myself really liking it, and even featured it on a previous five song Friday. My buddy Stu (thanks Stu!!!!!) insisted that I check out the rest of their record, Chasing Lights, and I am VERY glad that I did. There are some very well produced pop songs on that record, and Work, by far, is my favorite. That chorus is just fierce. Girls Aloud have definitely got some competition from these beauties; but I am willing to bet that the world has room for more than a few studio-produced girl pop super groups, right!? With songs like this, I know that I definitely have room for them on my ipod!

Lady GaGa – Starstruck

[audio:http://www.duanemoody.com/audio/fsf_1031_ladygaga-starstruck.mp3]
Okay, it is no secret that I love Lady GaGa. I gushed yesterday about her amazing performance on Wednesday night, as well as her CD’s release earlier this week (FINALLY!), and since it was such a GaGa week, I felt compelled to bring at least one more track from her amazing record to the table. This song was the song that she closed with the other night, and she fucking tore it up! In fact, since the show, I have been playing this banger on repeat. This song is a new song for fellow GaGa fans; it was one of the two new songs that she put on her already impressive record for release here in the states. I have to say, that she definitely has my vote for best new talent of 2008, and if she keeps churning out impressive pop like this, she is going to be bigger than huge. I am so glad that I got to see her live in such an intimate setting, and I was (and still am) starstruck by the amazing Lady GaGa. Also, make sure you go and check out the video for Poker Face, the second AMAZING single from The Fame… it is FIERCE!

Well, there you have it; another week on the books, and five more songs to tantalize your ears. This week ranged all the way from the acoustic to the banging-est beats, and I hope that everyone found a little something that they enjoyed. As always, let me know what you are listening to, and let me know what you think of these tracks! Have a safe and happy Halloween!!!
