I normally don’t freak out about the insane amount of diseases that we have running rampant throughout the world (keep in mind that right now, there is still bubonic plague in the world…), but this is some scary shit: the Asian bird flu has the potential to begin spreading from human to human, and if it does so, it becomes more likely there will be a pandemic, in which millions of people would die. Bird flu currently kills roughly half of the people that get it. Read: not so good.

Two convicted in transgender killing: but it isn’t a hate crime???

I just want to know how something like this can escape being defined as a hate crime? It is very obvious that this was more than simple assault that unfortunately ended with murder. If this girl had not been transgendered, then it is pretty much a given that it would not have even happened. How can we live in a country, where you can be killed for a hatred of who you are, and not be punished any differently than any other criminal? This type of crime (hate crime, that is), is one of the most violent types of crime, that is fueled by an intense hatred of who or what someone is. By not labeling this crime as a hate crime, and giving these people, what I consider a minimal sentence for something so horrible, diminishes the crime; and leaves the door open for things like this to happen in the future.

Now, I normally don’t like to get up on a soap box, but I kind of feel the need to do so right now. This trip to the box will include a request, no, a plea, for everyone to get tested for HIV, and convince everyone they know to get tested. Now, I know what you are thinking, “this is nothing new to me, Duane, I have heard this all before”. Well, here is something that you need to hear then: In a recent study, it was found that anywhere between 35-50% (or more) of young men who are infected with HIV, don’t know it. In some groups, young men are testing positive at rates near or higher than 50%. That means that half of certain groups of young men are testing positive! And most didn’t know it! Think of those out there that have never been tested!!
