So, as many of you know, I am an avid Alias fan, and have been for many years; always sticking by the show, even though it went slightly awry in season 4. I was upset to learn that this would be last season, not only because it is my favorite show, but because this season has been progressively getting better and better, and has been successful in making me forget about the mess from season 4. With that being said, I must admit that I went into the series finale with a large amount of anticipation, and an equal amount of trepidation about what would happen to the lovely Sydney Bristow. Thankfully, the series finale did a wonderful job of bringing the series full circle, and tied up loose ends that have been dangling since day one. Did the finale have and say everything that die hard Alias fans wanted? Probably not. But, given what they did give us, I have to say, it is probably all for the best. True there were some minor inconsistencies, but overall, no harm no foul. The show definitely ended on a high note.
I have to say that I will miss my Sydney Bristow, and the adventures she took me through. I will miss Rambaldi and the mysteries that surround his prophecies. I will miss Vaughn and Jack. I may even miss Sloane. But I can say without a glimmer of doubt, that I am extremely pleased with how the series ended, and I want to issue a huge thanks to the writers of those last two episodes. I feel like those episodes where everything we could have expected and more! I can’t wait to buy season 5 on DVD!
Now, after the jump, I am going to get into a little more detail about the finale, and I am doing this as not to spoil the episodes for anyone that hasn’t watched their tivos yet.
Basically, we come into this episode knowing that Syd and APO have got to stop Prophet 5, especially now that they have Vaughn’s father’s research about the organization. They identify the members of P5, known as “the 12”, and begin developing a plan of action to take them out. What they don’t know, is that Sloane is manipulating the situation, and in order to get what he wants (Rambaldi’s end game), he plans to not only take out the 12, but to take out APO as well. Sloane kidnaps Marshall and Rachel, and uses them to identify an underground cave where Rambaldi’s instructions for his end game can be found. Turns out, it is at the mountain where it all began; the one in the prophecy. Syd and Vaughn race to Italy to the mountain, only to find Sloane when they get there. Like a coward, he shoots out the ice from under Sydney, and she falls deep in the cave and gets seriously hurt. Vaughn saves her in the nick of time. While they are detained in Italy, Sloane sends Peyton (Rachel’s old partner while she worked for Gordon Dean) to kill the 12, and she does so without a hitch. At the same time, Sark plants a bomb in the subway near APO, which has enough power to take out all of the APO headquarters, the subway, and ends up killing Tom. Now that everyone is really pissed at Sloane, they scramble to take him out. What they don’t know, is that Sloane is working with “a partner” from Hong Kong, who gets him the Rambaldi Sphere he needs to complete the prophecy. As a part of the deal, Sloane purchases 2 missiles on the black market, which APO traces, and they discover that he is headed to Mongolia. Syd, Vaughn, and Jack head to stop him, but when they arrive, the find Sloane in Rambaldi’s tomb, already completing the prophecy. As the sphere fills with what looks like blood, Syd tells Sloane that there is no way he is going to get away, but the Sark brings Jack and Vaughn in as prisoners. Syd still refuses to let Sloane go, and disrupts the filling of the sphere, spilling the “blood” all in a pool on the ground. Sloane then shoots Jack in the chest, and a gunfight breaks out. Syd gets very upset about the possibility of Jack dieing, and in probably one of the biggest “YES!!!!!” moments of all of Alias, Syd kills Sloane, shooting him several times, and once in the head. He falls dead in the pool of “blood”. Then she calls for a medvac for Jack, and does some of the best acting of the series. He forces her to leave him at the site (he’s waiting on the medvac), because they discover that Sloane’s Hong Kong partner is Irina. Syd and Vaughn leave, and head to Hong Kong, and we discover that, yep, you probably guessed it, Rambaldi’s end game is eternal life; Sloane comes back from the dead. While we are in Hong Kong, Syd confronts Irina, but Marshall and Vaughn take out her missiles (which were set to strike Washington and London), and Irina and Sydney fight. Flash back to Mongolia, and Jack goes back into the tomb as Sloane is resurrected, and Sloane explains that he can’t be hurt or die. Jack says he can keep him in the tomb, and blows the whole thing up. Sloane is trapped under a rock, but still alive, and it is assumed he will be like that forever. HA! Syd and Irina’s fight ends when the sphere lands on a window ceiling, and instead of letting it go, Irina falls through to her death.
The end was very sweet, with Syd and Vaughn living at the beach, and having a son and naming him Jack. There were a few other things in the episode, like the flashbacks throughout Syd’s life that were fantastic and totally helped wrap everything up (showing that Syd was destined to do the work… kind of like Rambaldi prophesied), but there is so much, that I could write a novel. These episodes, especially the last one, were fantastic, and we get to see Syd and Vaughn end up together; which is what we wanted from the beginning. If you didn’t see it, make sure you get the DVD, because my description probably didn’t do it justice. Now, I am going to go, because I feel like a total dork for this long ass entry, and if you made it all of the way through, you rock. I know it is a long entry, but I loved this show, and this is kind of my last goodbye. I will miss you Alias, but I have all of the seasons on DVD, and I can guarantee you, we will be together for a long time. I have something great to look back on, and thank those behind the show for bringing us something so great!! Farewell Sydney Bristow!
