80’s cartoons to be made into movies?

Talk about a blast from the past! Oh, watch out! It’s Gargamel and Azrael! I just read this on msn.com:

Everyone’s favorite little blue cartoon characters, the Smurfs, are coming to the big-screen. Variety reports that Nickelodeon Movies and Paramount Pictures will produce a 3-D CGI feature based on the classic Belgian comic-strip that spawned a popular NBC animated TV series in 1981. Producers hope to bring back Papa Smurf, Smurfette, Brainy, Jokey and Grouchy in time for the characters’ 50th Anniversary in 2008. The film is also being conceived as the first in a trilogy of “Smurf” movies. Let’s hope there isn’t some “Dark Smurf” storyline worked in there.

LA la LA la la la, LA, la la la la!!! A movie about the Smurfs?? I love that! But seriously, they need to bring the Smurfs into the 21st century in this movie. Like, let’s start by getting more than one female in there, cause we all know that Smurfette is not responsible for carrying on the line of Smurfs (if you know what I mean). But, it could be that they practice the horrible cultural act of killing the baby girls… but that is a little dark for a cartoon. How about other possible plot lines? Here are a few I came up with: we all learn why Papa Smurf wears red and everyone else wears white; Vanity Smurf finally comes out, and declares his relationship with Hefty Smurf (who still has trepidations about coming out); Poet Smurf wins a national writing contest, and they all go on holiday with him; or Harmony Smurf turns to rap, drugs, and prostitutes, before an intervention has to be done. These are just a few ideas I think would be fun to see. Thoughts? Also, what’s next, a movie about the Snorks? Or about the Popples? Yes!!!! More 80’s cartoons please! (Honestly, I would love to see a Thundercats movie… if anyone that can make that happen is reading this!)

UPDATE: I just read that they are making a Voltron movie too!!! Holy shit!!! Check it out: read the article here.
